Every blog I read about training camp says that Ogletree is doing outstanding but every other blog I read says that we are only keeping 5 wr's. Is that true? Why can't we keep 6? We've done it before with Bill and if Ogletree is one of the best 53 then we should keep him.Who would we have to let go, Steve Octavian or someone like him? I did an admittedly quick count for realistic "locks" to make the team and came up with this:
OFFENSE
QB - 3
RB - 3
TE - 3
FB - 1
OL - 7
WR - 6

Thats 23 offensive players by my count

DEFENSE
DL - 6
LB - 8
CB - 5
Safety - 4

Thats another 23 defensive players leaving us 2 deep at every position and 7 extra spots to shore up positions for depth such as Oline, Dline, LB, and CB. So I ask again: Isn't it possible for us to keep a 6th wide receiver if he's good enough to contribute and is one of the best 53?

You need more than 7 OL. That's why 6 wr's may be out? Also the 4 safeties will be interesting, being that Deangelo Smith and Alan Ball are being thought of to do both. An interesting post... IMO!

Sure I understand. That would be part of the 7 extras. However say we add another olineman for depth purposes at center, that still leaves 6 to round out other positions.

Not sure they keep 3 QBs on the active roster, I see McGee on the practice squad but what do I know.

I suppose it is possible they keep 6 receivers for the final 53 man roster, but I do not see them keeping Ogletree active on game days just to be a return man.

They won't be cutting McGee, which is what they would have to do to get him on the practice squad. He will be on the final 53 man roster and then the inactive QB on the game day roster.

Your numbers are incorrect.... We still have our long snapper, two kickers and a punter. So we have 3 spots open if you want to keep 6 wrs. I say we just cut Stanback but he does (when healthy) play SP teams, Ogletree doesnt.....

Doh! I forgot about the specialized positions. Thanks. Wow that really brings home the arguments about how many wr's and kickers. With these additions to the Tally that only leaves 2 spots to add depth to LB, CB, and Safety. Just wow.

So will you guys definitely be keeping 2 kickers? I am just curious. Also 7 OL seems low. Not sure what a usual number would be, but I would of thought closer to 9, unless you are the d*** Giants and never lose a OL to injury.

I really think our WR talent is overrated.. Hurd JAG..Stanback Might be cut if injured again... Austin hate to say it JAG.. Crayton JAG.. Roy's got pedigree.. I rather Keep 4 tight ends than keep 6 WR's.. It's about time The Cowboys spend some high draft picks on WR's and OL men.. I know that being a First and second round pick is no guarantee but at least they come into the league with talent..

I think your opinion isn't justified. First off, you can't have 5 Fitzgeralds on the team. You need role players. I promise you, there are a bunch of teams out there praying the Cowboys release Austin, Hurd, Crayton and even Stanback.

I disagree I think the Cowboys are hoping teams like the Saints or Buffalo release some of their guys so we can pick them up. Saints got Colston, Meacham, Moore, Patton, Arrington, Henderson.. Buffalo has , TO, Evans, Parrish, Hardy, Reed and a couple of younger guys they are high on.. Jerry tries to find too many Diamonds in the rough..

There is no reason to keep 6 WRs.

First, we will be running a two TE offense often with Witten or even Bennett out wide.

Second, we are having a tough time just identifying a decent 5th receiver to bother keeping who isn't good enough for that.

Besides, WRs can be stashed on the practice squad with greater ease than most positions.

More double-tightend Sets mean keeping 3 Tightends and 5 Wide Receivers. I read somewhere that 60% of the time the Offense will be in a two tightend Set with Witten and Bennett.

If Tree is really doing that well, and showing so much greatness, then he'll have to hope they make him the #5 WR and cut Stanback. Otherwise he's likely not making the team.
