Every blog I read about training camp says that Ogletree is doing outstanding but every other blog I read says that we are only keeping 5 wr's. Is that true? Why can't we keep 6? We've done it before with Bill and if Ogletree is one of the best 53 then we should keep him.Who would we have to let go, Steve Octavian or someone like him? I did an admittedly quick count for realistic "locks" to make the team and came up with this:
OFFENSE
QB - 3
RB - 3
TE - 3
FB - 1
OL - 7
WR - 6
Thats 23 offensive players by my count
DEFENSE
DL - 6
LB - 8
CB - 5
Safety - 4
Thats another 23 defensive players leaving us 2 deep at every position and 7 extra spots to shore up positions for depth such as Oline, Dline, LB, and CB. So I ask again: Isn't it possible for us to keep a 6th wide receiver if he's good enough to contribute and is one of the best 53?
I think the WR and DB spots are linked. If we keep one less DB than "planned," then we can keep one more WR.
The numbers would work out like this:
QB 3 (Romo, Kitna, McGee)
FB 1 (Anderson)
RB 3 (Barber, Jones, Choice)
TE 3 (Witten, Bennett, Phillips)
WR 6 (Williams, Crayton, Austin, Hurd, Stanback, Ogletree)
OL 9 (Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Colombo, Free, Holland, Proctor/Gibbons, McQuistan)
DL 6 (Olshansky, Ratliff, Spears, Bowen, Siavii, Hatcher)
LB 9 (Ware, Brooking, James, Spencer, B. Williams, J. Williams, Carpenter, Hodge, Butler)
CB 5 (Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball, Mickens)
S 4 (Sensabaugh, K. Hamlin, M. Hamlin, Smith)
LS 1 (Ladouceur)
K 2 (Folk, Buehler)
P 1 (McBriar)
A lot depends on how the secondary shakes out (do we also keep Watkins for special teams? does Brown step up and secure a spot? does Mickens go on the PS?). We could also have issues to address at LB if neither B. Williams or Butler proves ready to step in for a few plays and at DE if Dixon comes back from injury and plays well enough to deserve a spot. Could even keep an extra OL if Gibbons plays well enough to deserve a spot, but doesn't show enough at center to take Proctor's spot.
