No FA signing by JJ would've made the Cowboys appreciably better in 2024

Yeah, Jerry’s apologists are either family, delusional or trolls.
Just not a constant whiner and I actually see Jones has made great improvements since the 90s. People whine because of the 29 going on 30 yrs SB gap but the Cowboys have been one of the best teams in football for at least a decade. Let's see if Jones can bounce back after a disappointing year. If he doesn't I will critique him more harshly. But you people act like Jones was not coming off three 12-5 seasons. Oh I forgot ... y'all blame Jones for the 15 losses

Cowboys are the only team where its local observers blame the GM after every loss! Hell the fanbase blames the GM if the team has a 2 yard loss on a run play! Jerry doesn't care about that loss--the stadium is full--the ratings are high--the cameras on him--thats all cares about--he doesn't care about winning! No fun being a Cowboys fan

Cowboys fans have such a flawed perspective. from most observers(except me) when it comes to the Cowboys.

No signing would've put anywhere near their level this season. And it would've been a waste of money
So making the team more competitive is a bad thing? Plus you add a piece last year, draft this year and free agency and who knows. Sitting on your hands gets you nowhere. Or go the other way and rebuild then. Don’t sit there idle going in no direction.

This has to be trolling at its finest. To say Jerry has done a lot since the 90’s? Who is the only team in the NFL to not make a championship appearance since the 90’s? One of the best teams in the last decade?
5 playoff appearances and 2 playoff wins is one of the best teams? Not making it out of the divisional round once is one of the best teams??
I hope for your sake you are trolling.

I can't argue against your points but at the end of the day adding FA to last years squad would've ended up being fruitless

What are you talking about? Sure Philly had plenty of drafted talent, but adding Barkley , Zack Baun , and Oren Burks was HUGE.

The problem in Dallas is that we let a bunch of guys walk several of whom were key cogs in the Washington resurgence, and we did nothing to replace them. Jerry basically sat out the off season until the draft. You can't do that in a competitive football league.
Yup. Did nothing in FA to replace the guys we lost, let alone add to the pre-existing holes/weaknesses/

Let our LT, RB, DE depth, corner depth, Center walk, and LVE retired.
So, instead of using FA to fill the old holes or new holes, they just re-signed Zeke, signed Kendrick, and used their picks to replace most of the above instead of trying to improve the team.
all they do most of the time is replace, but never build upon. Outside of that star player, or the OL they hit on in the 1st, they let the mid guys walk, and then use top picks to replace them.

1st round was Guyton. Raw RT from Oklahoma. Didn't pan out year 1 replacing Smith. He also got injured during the season and rumors about his toughness popped up
2nd round was Kneeland, replacement for Armstrong/depth
3rd round was Beebe, replacement for Tyler Biadasz
3rd round was Liufau depth LB, but they needed more than Kendrick for the LB spot
Round 5 was Carson, depth CB replacing Gilmore

At best, they were looking for status quo, but with cheaper rookies to fill those 2024 free agents that left.

Everything is not about the playoffs. You get 16(now 17) games a season. JJ team has been top 10 as far as being successful in those 16-17 games. He's won his division 5 times and been to the playoffs 6 times from 2014-23. If that's not great improvement over three straight 5-11, then I don't know what is.

Playoffs matter. Getting regular season wins to only do nothing in the playoffs is not success. Nobody cares or remembers a franchise winning a lot of regular season games. They remember what you do in the playoffs. The ultimate goal is obviously the Super Bowl. Yes you need to win regular season games to get to the playoffs but if you do nothing in the playoffs you are not successful.

That’s your opinion not fact. We both don’t know what happens. We do know what happened though sitting in their hands.

Im just critiquing him more harshly, and its well deserved. Stop your whining.

They've been there before and had a 10-1 record without him
Every year is different. I could see the Rams winning without Barkley's 200 yards and 2 TDs. Maybe the Eagles win 1 or 2 less games during the regular season and end up with a different path to the Super Bowl. Maybe they don't play (I'm sorry, I cannot stand the name Commanders and will forever recognize that franchise by its former name) the Football Team in the NFC Championship game. It's not to say the Eagles weren't a good team. I just think Barkley put them over the top in a way that another back would not have.

Re-sign Biadasz, secure the IOL. If Guyton's struggles significantly impact the offense, slide Smith out to LT, play Beebe at LG, and try Guyton out on the right side (where he played his last year in college).

Re-sign Dorrance Armstrong, fortify the DL rotation. Edge looked decent on paper, with Micah, Lawrence, Williams, and Kneeland, but there was no room for the inevitable attrition we saw when an aging Lawrence went down. Williams was an unknown outside of the occasional heat off of the edge. Kneeland was a solid addition, but would've been better served as a depth/rotational piece as a rookie. With Armstrong on board we would've had a guy that can play inside and outside, had proven to be a strong rotational piece capable of starting, and we wouldn't have been scrambling early in the season to field a viable line.

Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry would've transformed the offense. The need at WR would've been mitigated, as defensive focus would've shifted to slowing the rushing attack. Dowdle ran for 1100 yards behind this line at 4.6 yards a clip despite a rough passing attack, but only scored two TDs. Good between the 20s, but not a closer or a breakaway threat. Good YPC because defenses didn't fear him enough to gameplan against him. That added dimension brings the safeties up and opens up mid and long range targets in the passing game. Jalen Hurts was the Super Bowl MVP. Barkley ran it 25 times for 57 yards. On paper, that looks like terrible output, but the Chiefs defense was forced to respect that aspect of the game, as Barkley nearly set the NFL single season rushing record. When you're forced to respect the run, meaning you have to account for another breakaway offensive weapon, you remove focus from other areas of the offense. Hurts went 17/22, 221 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 11 Rushes, 71 yards, 1 TD, and he did it because he was playing on easy mode. A great rushing attack improves an offense and keeps a defense fresh. It isn't hard to understand.

DT Johnathan Hankins. Doesn't take much to understand the need to stop the run. Would've been a cheap veteran that was familiar with the team, but $2m for a quality trench player was too much.

That's $33m(ish) a year on average for 4 players. Dallas carried over $20m and could've opened up alot more with restructures. With clever accounting all of these guys could've been on the roster. Three of those guys were key contributors for division rivals that finished ahead of us. I think it's reasonable to say having all 4 on the roster puts us in playoff contention. Instead, we watched Philly run away with the division and win a Super Bowl. Was saving that extra cash worth it?

The Eagles core group was stronger than the Cowboys. No offseason signing would've put a dent in that gap. Fact is, the Eagles have been the best team in football for two and a half years. Should've won the SB two years ago--had a 10-1 record to start last season(2023)--this year they blew the doors off down the stretch. Over the past few years the Eagles have beaten the Chiefs twice -- the Bills --- Ravens -- Bengals -- the best the AFC has to offer.

The Eagles didn't win because of offseason signings. The offseason signings only strengthen what was already a championship core. Then add in their most important addition to the team in 2024... the defensive coordinator (how did he make that lateral move?)

The time for JJ to be proactive in trying to strengthen a championship level core for the Cowboys was in 2021 and 2022

Cowboys signing FA in 2024, would've only reinforced Stephen Jones belief that you don't get your bang for your buck in FA

And I believe the Cowboys were more of a 9 or 10 win team in 2023. Fact is, the Cowboys had about 4 or 5 games that year that they couldn't lose even if they wanted too

The 35-10 loss to Buffalo and the beatdown at SF is who they really were. And then not being able to put away a weak Dolphin's team

Ironic thing is, the FA losses are actually doing more damage to the team than the lack of FA signings

Cowboys lost four starting offensive linemen since 2021?

Four wide receivers? Go look at the group from 2021 compared to this one

Two running backs?

How many defensive linemen? At least two this past offseason

Dak's most reliable target. Dalton

Cowboys have been hit as hard as they were in the 90s. I know some of these guys would have needed to be replaced anyway but even JJ biggest detractor has to admit in good faith that even the best GM would need a season or two to regroup. Right?
I see you are taking over the Blind Nonsensical Homer Post Department

Is @rambo2 fired or just tired and taking a break
