No Greg Hardy ruling yet, too many days later

I agree. It appears the NFL deferred to the legal system for the criminal case but decided to treat their internal investigation as a civil case. The problem is the NFL is not remotely equipped (or competent) for this role. However, the courts are to blame. In the Ray Rice case the NFL was criticized for "too much deference to the judicial outcome". Well, the NFL responded in kind. Catch-22.

I agree, but since all this happened under the old system. They shouldn't be using the new rules or this new judicial system of their own. I don't think the nflpa ever signed off on this new system either way.

There's no doubt the NFL is going to drag this out as long as possible to give Hardy less time to get this into a judge's hands. The NFL knows they will likely get slapped again by the court system (shoot, the NFL lead counsel basically admitted this). So the less time Hardy has to file his complaint before season starts, the more likely they can guarantee that he misses some games.

It would be interesting to compare how much time has elapsed in the past when players have appealed a NFL ruling and when the NFL ruled on that appeal.

21 days and counting.....

This is like appealing a court decision in Mother Russia.

It pretty clear this is being done intentionally by Henderson by direction of the league.

Hardy impressive, but suspension looms

It’s uncertain when Greg Hardy will be allowed to play. The NFLPA’s appeal of his 10-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the league is currently being reviewed. But the defensive end is already making a major contribution to the Cowboys by bringing a heightened level of intensity to organized team activities that is noticeable.

“I like his work ethic,” defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said. “It’s every second, every down. The guy never takes a relaxed step the whole day. He is a grinder. He really loves football.”

Hardy, who has lined up on the edge and inside, hasn’t played in a game since September 2014 and appears to be making up for lost time by going through his repetitions with vigor.

Overheard last week in the locker room was a conversation between a pair of his teammates who were marveling at the fact that Hardy’s effort far exceeded the norm in that kind of practice — maybe to the point that he overstepped what was acceptable.

“I can’t say enough positive things about how he’s approached it day-in and day-out, how he has worked, how he talks, how he communicates,” tight end Jason Witten said. “I don’t think he feels like he has to prove something to us. I just think he does it because that’s what he does.”

What to expect in minicamp: More of the same. Hardy was the talk of the organized team activities because of his assiduous approach to practice. Per the guidelines of his suspension, Hardy is allowed to participate in the veteran minicamp, and he should leave his mark during the three-day event.

“Greg Hardy is doing amazing,” defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford said.

I can't see how Dallas wouldn't try to extend him beyond this year, assuming he actually plays well this season. With the love for the game, intensity, and high motor that he brings, along with the fact that he plays one of the most impactful positions in the game at an elite level, he seems like exactly the type of guy this staff savors.

FWIW, on Sept 16th Ray Rice filed his appeal to his indefinite suspension. 16 days later the NFL announced, after talking with the NFLPA, to appoint a federal judge as the arbitrator. Now the actual case didn't happen until November and the judge ruled 23 days after the hearing. But the NFL announced their decision to move this to a federal judge 16 days after the appeal.

Adrian Peterson had his appeal hearing on Dec 2nd and Dec 4th. On December 12th, Henderson gave his ruling. 3 days after that, the NFLPA had their lawsuit filed.

So............ Rice waited 16 days to hear the results of his hearing, which resulted in the NFL agreeing to send this to a neutral arbitrator. Peterson waited 8 days to hear the NFL's ruling on his appeal.

Hardy sits at 21 and it doesn't appear any ruling is coming any time soon.

The league is so stupid. If they keep this up, Hardy will start to become a sympathetic figure of all things.

And this only strengthens the contempt-of-court case filed by the NFLPA against the NFL.

I don't think most people--even most NFL fans--are waiting in pins and needles for the arbitrator's ruling.

Only to Cowboys fans. I don't read or hear a lot of anguish about this other than Cowboys fan boards.

No, but NFL fans are up in pitchforks and torches over the way Goodell is running the league. And this contempt case is going to get attention.

Have you seen anyone who is not a Cowboys fan who thought 10 games was too much or that the appeal is taking too long? I have no doubt they'll use it against Goodell if they think they can, but Hardy isn't winning anyone's sympathy.

Actually, yes. He's getting more than a 20-game suspension if you count last year.

And if you use the rule in place at the time of incident, he should receive no suspension at all.

But didn't he get paid for those days off?

If he was getting paid but not playing and subjecting his body to further pain, I don't think many people are going to have too much sympathy for him.

What it amounts to is vacation time.

Peterson got paid. I don't think Hardy did.

Only cowboy fans think it's too much. If you asked them though, they would think the same thing even if he wasn't a cowboy. I'm fact a few would tell you they followed the case closely while he was panther and thought he was innocent then.

That is a great post. Hardy should be extended. He might be the most impactful DL the Cowboys have had since Haley. Great DL make a great defense. Look at the past with the Cowboys. Bob Lilly, Randy White, Too Tall Jones, Harvey Martin, Charles Haley. These people brought out the best in the Cowboys defenses of the past, and Hardy can be the present and the future of the Cowboys defense.

Who? I don't think the ruling makes sense, but I admit that if he weren't on my team I'd either think the more punishment the better or I'd have trouble being concerned about another team's problems. Who is outraged who isn't pro-Cowboys?

If Hardy didn't get paid, that changes EVERYTHING.

No way, he should be suspended, then.

I'm not sure. I see conflicting reports saying both.

What were the rules when it happened? That's all that should matter.

You can't change the speed limit tomorrow and write me a ticket for how fast I drove a week ago.
