No improvement I could see with Bobby Carpenter

I was confused when we drafted him and haven't seen ONE bit of improvement to convince me he will ever contribute: he should be cut NOW.

**(have to respectfully disagree with anyone that claims they saw him do much of anything last night: just didn't see it. He was no better than the rest of our scrub reserves were)

Carpenter is a quick agile guy...But he just doesnt look like a Football guy. He had good coverage skills but everything else He looked average. Not aggressive enough.

I am still hoping that Carpenter turns the corner, but......

Watching him last night, and he is pretty quick and instinctive in pass coverage, but he is NOT aggressive at all in the run game and in tackling. It really bugs me to see him get to the pile late, time after time, and then stand there looking down with his hands on his hips (fingers curled in, with back of his wrists against his sides). What is he looking for, loose change that fell out of someones pockets? Yes, Carpenter, that should be you diving into the pile down there, you are a LINEBACKER, not a cb or free safety that is 10 yards back from the play.

He does struggle getting to the ball carrier and meeting ball carriers head on. When he does tackle it is very often from the back or sides and carrier gets 2-4 more yards each time.

He timed one blitz really well, but the FB (or was a big rb) got a piece of him and he stopped dead, not being able to carry any momentum to the QB. I thought for sure he was gonna harrass the throw at least, but just didn't seem to have that last gear to fight his way through. Still see Carpenter as being a 1/2 second behind, or a tad too soft (despite his impressive size/build) to be an effective run stopper. Maybe he should shed 10 pounds, work on speed/agility/quickness, and purely be used as a coverage LB.

Thought Brooking showed a little speed on that sack up the middle.

Theebs and I went to TC last weekend together (holding hands), and we both came away with a new opinion of the Brooking signing. He looks ultra quick and lean. He can make the steady plays like Zach did in '08 as well as the occasional big play, i.e. turnovers, sacks, etc. I look for big things out of #51 in 2009.

I am not giving up on Carpenter yet.
I'd love for him to make a play or 2 when he's playing with the #1 D in the Nickel package during this pre-season. I think he's up against it pretty bad when the #3 D-Line is in front of him.

The 2nd string D line really sucked last night so it would have been hard for any ILB to really impress.

I'll start by saying I use to be a big Bobby Carpenter fan but even my patients has been exhausted.

I thought Bobby had great tools with his size and speed and thought by year 3 with coaching and being in the NFL he was going to be a cross between Brian Urlacher and Jack Ham.

During the game I somewhat isolated on him to see what he would make out of his opportunity this year to redeem himself and prove us wrong about his first few years .

What I saw last night is that he hasn't learned or is not willing to learn to game at the NFL level. He still (like day one) lets blockers get their hands on him. He lets blockers escort him to the door out of the play. Doesn't use his hands or sheds blocks. He has no anticipation (football instincts) it seems, he does not attack the hole, he stands back and waits for the play to come to him. These are all things he should have learned and put into practice by now, I've seen no improvement.

Im ready and I think the Cowboys should move on and fill his spot with their draft choices or a better player in the final cuts before the season starts.

well after 1 (one, uno) PRESEASON game, I see he looked better than usuall.

Exactly! It wasn;t like anyone on the D line was drawing a double team to keep the guards off Carp. The Raiders seemed to always have a spare blocker to pick him up when he blitzed. No passes were completed to his man (that I saw) and he dang near had a pick.

Had Ware and Ratliff been in there, I am sure he would have gotten through on some of the blitz's. They also moved him around a lot. He was playing some OLB in the 4-3, some Mike, some Mo, and although he did not look great against the run, who did?

What did Spencer do? Is anyone calling for him to be cut? Apply the same standards folks.

Maybe that should be Bobbie's new nickname: Dang Near - as in, "dang near had a pick" or "dang near had a sack" or "dang near got a tackle" or "dang near got the punter killed" or "dang near earned a job".

I thought his one good play in coverage was just a bad pass by the QB. The tight end ran right by Bobby and was open for a possible TD. The Raider QB failed to loft the ball and instead threw it on a line.

Carpenter is not a NFL player. He's taking up a spot that should go to someone who at least has some potential to help the team.
