No Respect

I remember the days when the Cowboys were respected. And they deserved to be. 1970-82, 1992-96...unfortunately we haven’t earned it since.

When was the last time the Cowboys were favored to reach the SB midway or by the end of the regular season? It was 2007. I know people can say 2016 but we really weren't the best in the NFC. Every year since 2007 we've seen either mediocre play or a good team but not ranked among the best. With the exception of 2016 which I'll admit is debatable. But in all of those years not counting 2009, Dallas has had a weak to trash defense. People are not used to seeing the Cowboys with a good defense, and that might take some time to get used to. That's the element that has been missing from these Cowboys. And it may surprise a lot of people how well the Cowboys do. Just not me.

Great. I have already backed the Cowboys to win the SB at 25/1. If you think the Boys will do it, back them at great odds. Take the bookies money.
I would point out however i have placed a bet on the Cowboys every year since 1989 ( so you can work out how many wins i have won- got 16/1 in 92).
If enough boys fans backed them for the SB the sheer weight of money would mean those odds would collapse, so it could be argued our fans aren't putting their money down on the team.

Respect was earned. Where were you last season? Cowboys beat the Eagles both times and won the NFC East Division. How in the Hell are the Eagles ranked higher than the Cowboys after all of last year?
Because the Cowboys have history on their side. Year after year nothing but chokes. Every time this team was supposed to contend they've come up short. Every odd number year lately the Cowboys have failed to make the playoffs. I keep hearing it's different this year. I heard that during the Romo years too. A lot of talking and no action. I fell for it a few times then. We have a new OC and we have no idea if he's any good or not and we have the same HC we always have. Sorry not buying it until I see it. The Cowboys don't deserve any respect. Try putting back to back good seasons together and maybe go deep in the playoffs and they'll get it. My last memory of last year was a scub RB making mincemeat of our vaunted defense. Don't really care about the Eagles. I think they're overrated and the media has always been in love with them.

True, to a certain extent. And the contenders do change.

But when the measurement range has consistently been between, say, Cleveland (low) and NE (high) for at least the last 20yrs, certain patterns become evident.

For instance, over my suggested 20yr span, we’ve been somewhat better than mediocre, but not quite (yet) elite. Would you agree with that?
Yea, usually predictions are based on history and current trends.

Cowboys are trending up but it hasn’t been sustained. Especially in playoffs.

I would have thought the Cowboys had earned more respect after starting 3-5 last year but still winning the division and a playoff game.

I’m excited for the team this season.
Good point ..

I think some aren’t sure if we aren’t closer to the 3-5 team than the 10-6 team?

For those who believe this is an up and coming team full of talent how did we arrive at 3-5?

It would be a fairly reasonable assumption from that point ( at 3-5) that the team over achieved winning division at 10-6. Especially after finishing 9-7 previous season.

And why some might be questioning are we closer to a 9-7 non playoff team or a 10-6 divisional winner? It would certainly explain some of these predictions.

I don't care about respect or whatever...

But it's a real head scratcher to me that the Eagles are ranked ahead of the Cowboys anywhere. They should be able to score points throwing it 50 times per game, but that defense is going to be horrible.

Despite injuries, both games were only 1 score that came down to the end. Eagles despite losing all of the secondary and running backs still got as far in the season. Its the only thing I can think of that would give people that impression. NFCE was a mess last year and it came down to who was least injured and sucked less.

Eagles have had a Super Bowl winning team the past several years, along with 2 very good QBs and some very good coaches. Cowboys have not. It's a huge difference between both teams. The Eagles have had a big advantage over the Cowboys, overall, yet the Cowboys have done almost as well with a lot less. Now that the Cowboys are super loaded with talented players, along with new coaches at key positions, Cowboys should truly make a noise in the playoffs... if Dak stays healthy.

Thats really what it comes down to, who is healthy at the end of the year plays a big role in it. Hopefully, both Cowboys and Eagles are close to full strength when we play each other. I think they will be some of the best football to watch this year league wide.

Last year the Cowboys went 10-6 with a point differential of +15. That's what you'd expect from an 8-8 or 9-7 team. I looked a little deeper and found that the Cowboys went 9-3 in score (8 pts or less) gamea, I decided to go back several years to see what happened to teams that won a lot of close games the next season.
From 2010-2017 23 teams won 7 or more 1 score games.
Of those teams
1 team improved their overall record the next year.
5 teams had the same record
17 had a worse record.

The one team that improved was the Denver Broncos from 2011 to 2012 when the replaced Tim Tebow at QB with Peyton Manning.
Two of the 5 teams that had the same record the next season ended up winning the Super Bowl. (2011 Ravens and 2014 Patriots) In both cases those teams in their seasons with 7+ 1 score wins had perfect records in games decided by more than 8 points. (Ravens 4-0, Patriots 5-0) The Cowboys went 1-3 in games decided by more than 8 points.

I expected the overall decline from this type of team but I didn't expect it to be this one-sided. I'm not arguing the Cowboys are doomed but it's a negative indicator.

A couple of questions:
1. What is your definition of respect?

Just a general consensus of our team around the league, and where the oddsmakers think the money will go

2. What have our Cowboys done to garner respect from anyone besides us fans?

We won the division last year, and playoff game.

To me respect is something a team earns by winning in the playoffs. We haven’t done much of that in a long time. So I don’t mind being “disrespected” at this point. I look forward to our team earning some respect this year. It’s the only way to get it.

In the next few days, I’m taking a flyer on the Boys to win the Super Bowl. $500 to win $12,500. I feel more optimistic about this year than I have in a long while.
Wow, that's some stones man. I drop some money on them every year if I happen to be in Vegas but I've never put down that kind of cash. Of course, I'll lose several hundred over the weekend on games I have no chance at so what do I know. The wife and I actually came out almost 2K ahead the last time out there just playing video poker. Most of it was her. She also hit 4 of a kind on let it ride another time for $2500 so I never gamble without her now. Good luck on your bet! We'll enjoy the win as much as you will!

Agreed. Will likely be some of the best games to watch league-wide.

League wide?

NFC East is some of the most boring to watch. If it wasn’t for their games being of direct interest to the Cowboys would be the last ones I’d watch.

So many more explosive offenses and elite QB’s league wide to watch.

Great. I have already backed the Cowboys to win the SB at 25/1. If you think the Boys will do it, back them at great odds. Take the bookies money.

25-1 is not a bad bet!
I wouldnt bet on the Cowboys because of coaching.
I look at these teams and man its difficult to pick a SB team but generally a rule of thumb is if its not Tom Brady there is a good chance it will be a first round QB with a defense winning it.
So that leaves Brady, Goff,Luck,Wentz and I think you have to throw Mahommes in there because he is just too good even though he doesnt have a defense yet.
Of those teams I would eliminate Wentz because if injury history and put Andrew luck as my favorite long shot. That leaves Goff, Brady and Mahomes. I could see Mahomes beating the Patriots with a passing of the torch from Brady.
So that would put Goff and Mahomes and you have to give the edge to the man who had over 5k yds and 50 tds.

Brees and Rodgers are getting old and I dont trust Trubiskey, Cousins, Prescott.
