Can I point out that the Atlanta kicker missed FOUR field goals today? The kicker coached by Steve Hoffman. You know--the coach everyone keeps harpingharpingharpingharping on & bashing Parcells for firing.

I'd love to hear how those folks explain FOUR missed field goals in one day. And what they would be saying if one of our kickers (you know, the ones not coached by Hoffman) had missed four.

You're right. We are going to disagree on this topic. It doesn't matter that your head coach makes the following comment on this subject:

"I think we could surmise that I really didn't want to keep two kickers and there was a domino effect on the rest of the roster." LINK

It doesn't matter that 31 out of 32 NFL teams only have ONE placekicker on its roster. (Guess which team has two PK's?)

The only thing that matters is that Suisham is a great special team addition. Great.

Good night. :)

Hey, if you are going to pull quotes from the coach about not liking taking two kickers to a game, then also pull some quotes about him on our kicking game last year. He may not like it, but he is doing it. And in my mind its worth it. We went out and got perhaps the best kicker available (Venituri would be the other, but hey New England let him get away) and I don't care what was said early on, we knew there was a risk we would have to keep two kickers if that was the player we went after.

The reason Suisham is hear is because Vanderjagt can't kickoff. He hasn't done it this year (in the season) and he hasn't done it for years.

My point is our special teams is better this year than last, even keeping two kickers. Quote all you want, but we had a field goal specialist get us 3 scores ahead in the 4th quarter with 9 minutes left by kicking a 50 yard field goal. Didn't necessarly win us the game, but we only have to look back 1 year to the day to see what a difference 3 scores vs 2 scores makes.

We disagree...sleep well

Vanderjagt was great today. I thought his long kick was a sealer.

I have a hunch though (and I doubt we ever know for sure) that Parcells was testing him. Bill is always talking about pressure. I think he wanted to see what he had. I would also imagine that he had to be pleased.

For everyone on the forum - how not to run your special teams when looking for a kicker!!!

In May 2006 the Falcons choose not to offer a contract to Todd Peterson after he kicks for 92% conversion rate on FGs in 2005.

They attempt to low ball him with a vet minimum offer. They then bring in three no name kickers and ask Hoffman to make something out of these guys.

They are so bad that they can't even beat out the punter!

If you want to know what happened in today's game, one FG was blocked and three strayed by Koenen, the punter! Not a FG kicker, but a punter.

The talk in Atlanta is that Hoffman is beside himself and sees the same problems that he faced in Dallas.

From May till September is hardly a recipe for making a NFL calibre kicker.

So let's stick to the facts and avoid making this a Hoffman problem when clearly us Dallas fans were willing to pay big for tried and true vet when Atlanta was not.

That kid looked AWESOME in the preseason as well.

I admit it, I wanted Vandy's head on a platter in the preseason... just goes to show that I have no business coaching the Cowboys! :D

I'm thrilled that we can finally look at a stat line under "FG" and see 100%. How long has that been? The MNF game where Cundiff hit 7 in a row?

Not sure but what was nice was that for the first time in a long time, one of our kickers made a kick that iced a game by putting us way ahead. Twice (Washington and Seattle) last year Cortez missed such kicks and we ended up out of the playoffs and that is not counting the game in Oakland where his earlier miss made us go for the TD instead of the chip shot tieing FG with a minute to go.

... I would smile if the season ending stat said 87% for the entire year.

So true. Although I must admit I was none too confident when they were lining up the kick. Hand it to Vanderjagt though...he nailed it, and got a monkey off his back tonight.

Parcell's quote tonight on that kick:

"He made a good clutch kick there," Parcells said. "That three points was big right there."

It just seemed like too often and too long, on any given game, you were guaranteed that at LEAST one of the FG attempts was going to be a waste. If Vandy can hit FG's consitently (87 would be great) I dont care HOW much money Jerry pays him. I just cant stomach another season of losing games by a FG.

And yes, it can not be under stressed how important a FG is. As was mentioned, tonight it iced the game. Who knows how momentum would have been last week had we made the FG before the half.

If Akers didnt miss a FG earlier, the Giants probably dont get the amazing win. People may hate FG kickers, but if you want to be succesful, you better have a good one. Pats dont have 3 Superbowl victories w/o Vinateri.

Agreed. I can understand the disdain for kickers. But I can't understand why some are so hesitant to praise a good one or, worse, don't want to acquire a good one.

Yeah, he went out and "did his job" tonight. But so did most every other player. It's TO's job to catch the ball. It's Bledsoe's job to get it there. But this is a sport -- like every other -- where 100-percent execution is not possible. So, when a player executes, he deserves praise for "doing his job" IMO.

It's not like kickers are universally connecting on 94% of their kicks, much less from 50 yards.

I think after the 50 yarder, we all can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Parcells should stop complaining about having to carry 2 kickers. Accept it, deal with it, move on.

have to agree two good kickers is better than an extra special teamer, and what a punter we have to boot ......all these kickers give us awsome field position advantage every game...I like it.........soon to be an NFL Trend..HAHAHA
