What happens if Romo gets hurt for 2 or 3 games? And we lose all three and just barely miss the playoffs because we had no backup QB. We'll be stuck in the middle again. You can't go into a season with backups that have no NFL experience.

We get a good draft position again.:D

Yep...

I wish we'd go with Vick.. I know he's not a scheme fit but he can throw it deep and he can run.

I'm not really worried about if a guy can run our scheme or not. I want a guy that can put points on the board and i'm more confident that Vick can move the chains and put points on the scoreboard more than I am with a pocket passer like McCown who has nobody open because the scheme sucks.

At this point in Vick's career, and as it relates to the future of the Cowboys, Dak > Vick.

I think Dallas is a playoff caliber team with a decent QB. But the kinds of QBs that could go .500 with this team aren't going to be had for a reasonable price, if they could even be had at all. Orton was the best backup the team has had in the Romo era, and even he couldn't deliver when it was "win and in".

Kitna was better.

Exactly. The goal is a good backup who could fill in for up to a month. He needs to have gone through camp and preseason so that he knows the playbook and the coaches know is strengths and can play to them. Honestly, that last part is my biggest concern. Can these coaches play to a quarterback strengths no named Romo?

Everyone already knows the season is sunk regardless if Romo goes down early. If it's season ending it doesn't even matter if it's late. At this point there is nothing but junk left out there in FA, or guys we would have to give up too much to trade for - that won't even provide anything substantial ie championship. Give Dak and Showers the reps, and unless they also get hurt, ride it out, and figure out what they can do and the plan for next offseason.
The vet is if Romo misses 2-3 games. A vet has FAR greater odds in a short game stretch of outperforming Dax..or maybe even any rookie this year.
Obviously if he goes down like last year, then they should throw in the towel and play Dax. Nothing to lose and they'd get a better look at what they have.
This seems pretty straight forward to me, but I guess others don't agree.

We need a guy who's at least played in a few NFL games. If one's not available this early in camp, we'll have to wait for later when one shakes loose, and we'll be in the same situation we were in last season with the guy coming up to speed while Romo plays.

Did we actually IR Moore, btw?

We can't IR him until the season starts, or something like that.

Football by Football:

"What’s encouraging – not only for Tennessee but for the NFL -- is how it appears Mariota will be used this season. Much of the credit goes to head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who also serves as the Titans’ play-caller / offensive mind. Whisenhunt used some of the same plays Mariota ran with success at Oregon and inserted them into his own scheme and philosophy."

Now I am NOT saying Showers nor Dak is Mariota, I just wanted to point out how Whisenhunt used/incorporated some of the things Mariota did well with while at Oregon. Why can't Linehan and Garrett find out what Dak and Showers did well with while in college and incorporate some of those things into plays for them UNTIL they develop/mature at QB. I see both of them as being very mobile, so use that. Would I prefer a skilled Back-Up? Yes! But I don't want to overpay nor give up draft picks. We have a good stable of RBs, enough talent with our WRs and TE. Do some roll outs, spread formations, screens, move Dez to the slot ... IF our athletes are or should be at the highest levels of their peers, shouldn't we expect the same from our coaching staff. They are professional NFL coaches, earn your keep!

Please get a vet. Dak doesnt need to see the field unless there is a serious emergency.

Yeah, if we're pressing somebody into action, it should be Showers right now. Dak's got enough to work on as it is.

I'm with you, why bring in another Cassel or Weeden when you know that didn't work, besides you're really not going to find anything on the trash heap at QB (outside of Johny Ball) and Showers/Prescott need the reps vying for the #2.

I was wrestling with this, and yes i want a vet if romo misses 3 games. On the other hand when has he only missed 3 games? When he gets hurt its usually for something that is going to keep him out for a major stretch. If that happens I would rather have an athletic young QB and a strong stable of running backs. If all goes as planned we never need to use the back ups. I'm not sure there is a right/wrong answer here, which is why the cowboys are taking their time.

That is inaccurate, as is, arguably, the injury prone label:

Romo Games Played by Year:

2015: 4
2014: 15
2013: 15
2012: 16
2011: 16
2010: 6
2009: 16
2008: 13
2007: 16
2006: 16

If there is a shot at getting Romo to the playoffs then I want in the playoffs.

Romo is 36 and has limited time left in this league and I want every playoff chance we can get.

If he is done for the season then i'm fine with tanking.

To each his own, but that's not a mindset I will ever be comfortable with.

I hate the term 'tanking' too. But I would play my younger players and see what I've got if Romo were down for the year. Like last year, when we should have played Moore instead of Cassel, for example.

I'm assuming that's what he meant, but you never know.

The issue is if Romo misses something like 4 games. You would like your backup to win 50% of games if you think you have a good team. With Dak, we'd go 0-4.
There is no one available out there significantly better than Weeden or Cassel and we wen't 1-12 last year with those guys.

The problem is for this team to win the offense needs to be overwhelming - this defense has proven time and again over the past several years it can't be counted on to win games. Once you get a backup QB in there (and Garret/Linehan's apparent complete inability to adjust the game plan for them) that strategy goes out the window. We're just not built to win with inadequate QB play, so why blow draft picks to get someone who will in all likelihood lose just as many games as Dak would?
