Norm Hitzges tears Jason Garrett a new one

Nicely said.

Everyone keeps saying Garrett is such a young coach. Bullcrap. He's only been a HC for a year, but he's been involved in professional football for two decades, and in football in general all his life. Basic decisions such as those that were screwed up Sunday do not require a person with a genius I.Q. What about the Harbaugh brothers? They're young coaches. Jim is in his first year as a HC too. He doesn't seem to make such glaring mistakes. Garrett's game management is questionable at best.

It's not really hindsight when people are saying the opposite when it's actually happening. The gameday thread was chock full of people who were stunned at what they were seeing in the final 25 seconds. Just like they were screaming for them to throw the ball in the Pats' game on that next to last drive.

In my opinion, Garrett is irredeemable as an HC. If a coach 1) doesn't realize that giving the ball back to Tom Brady with that much time left in a hurry-up situation is almost certain death, and 2) doesn't realize that a 49 yd FG is only slightly better than a 50/50 proposition so he needs to get closer (especially since he has 2 timeouts and plenty of time), then there isn't much left to defend. If he can't be trusted to make the most obvious decisions, then no matter how much we like the cut of his jib, he isn't the coach we hoped he was. But hey, Barry Switzer won a SB so anything is possible.

John Lynch was totally silent when we let the clock run down after Dez's catch and even after we called the TO. And he's the paid analyst??

And what anyone that thinks Jason Garrett pisses nothing but excellence?

First let me say I love Norm and think he's spot on w/ most of his comentary.

I read the first page or so of posts in this thread and I agree w/ them.

I have always been of the opinion that this team does as little as possible to win. That is problem one. Also, they take lesser opponents lightly, which is inexcusable considering the Cards have done this to us 3 years in a row. And thirdly, I think it was Drew Pearson (in an interview w/ somebody about his induction into the ROH) that said most of the players on this team appear to be standing around waiting for somebody else to make a play. I have been trying to say this for years, but could never articulate it as effectively as Drew. That to me is a coaching/managemt (Jerry) problem.

This is why I don't feel I'm overacting when I predict 4-12 seasons. If not for some coaching mistakes by other coaches (Harbaugh) and poor kickers (Wash and Miami) we'd be 4-8 not 7-5.

I will not be suprised if we do not make the POs and I don't think this team is PO caliber. I base this on the theory that if you can't pass algebra, you probably won't make it in calculus. And I really question if 90% of the team even cares about playing in January. I don't think they do. They just want to pick up their checks and start enjoying the offseason. Older players "contaminate" the thinking of the young ones, which is why we never get over the hump. This is why I think it was a good move by Jerry to get rid of theose OL guys this summer.

I think the answer is a new GM, but we know that won't happen, so we'll porobably get Norv if Jerry decides to make a change, but that won't help either...
I think that you're spot on with one exception: I think most of the team does want to win. With the exits the last few years of Greg Ellis, Gurode, Davis, Adams, etc. I think most of the bad element is gone from the lockerroom. I'm sure there's a few and are on almost every team, but I don't think that's really an issue now. It isn't that they don't want to win big, it's that they don't know how. We don't have a lot of guys who have had real playoff success.

None of that matters, he's been coaching for 5 years, QB Coach to OC to Assistant Head Coach to HC in record pace despite having virtually no coaching experience before that.

Garrett may be a heck of a leader, but as far as actual coaching goes (and I don't mean pep talks and playcalling, but primarily actual GAME PLANNING) he's been making it up as he goes along since he got here, with varying degrees of success.

They showed Sean Payton in a meeting with Drew Brees a few weekends ago, they talked about various game situations and what they'd do under different situations and lo and behold, they did exactly that in the game and it resulted in a redzone score.

Clearly, Garrett isn't at that level yet because the offense often looks completely lost during situational football, despite how much Garrett says he preaches it.

The lethargy of that final 1st half drive was infuriating. More points? Nah, we're good.

One things for sure: this team defintely lacks a killer instinct. I think it goes back just to being a dumb football team.

Or we might make a 2010 Washington-like mistake that Garrett would be directly responsible for.

yes, that was an impressive clip.

i'm sure we do something similar, but i swear it doesn't look like it at times.

10 days of preparation, and they came out flat on offense AGAIN. how many weeks in a row are they going to come out looking lethargic?

Totally different circumstances. That play against Washington was right before the half. The play that was called and resulted in a fumble didn't make sense because it wasn't going to get us anwhere on the last play of the half. The brain fart Sunday was at the very end of regulation when the game WAS on the line. You can't coach scared, which is IMO one of Garrett's biggest obstacles right now. He's coaching not to make mistakes and it's absolutely obvious. Even what he said after the game proves as much. You will not be successful coaching that way.

I stopped listening at the point he said
"I don't give a dam** if the HC is comfortable with 50-yard FG, is the kicker comfortable?...."

With all due respect Mr Norm...
1- He said "WE" were compfortable..NOT "ME"
2- He doesn't decide 50-yard is comfortable unless the team (ST coaches/kicker) set their target and inform the HC before game what they are capable of.

The guy might know football...but clearly trying to dig way too deep and getting too emotional to have a go at JG...

I would expect it from fans, but a guy like Norm, should have more self-control on his comments, knowing this is a rocky HC who is BUILDING A TEAM from a 6-10 record team. Calm down and control your emotions

Let's move on

The discussion was about the play in the last series of the half - We went only 20 yards in 2 minutes + a time out. It didn't seem like Garrett had any urgency at that point as BB pointed out. I also think that he could have feared making another Washington 2009 like turnover to end the half - pretty straight forward.

Possibly, but still different circumstances. We had quite a bit of time with the ball before the half on Sunday. In the Washington game, we called a play that wasn't going to go anywhere (last play of the half) that resulted in a turnover. Even then I didn't really have a problem with that play call. It just didn't work out. I would have preferred we air it out on that last play because what was called wasn't going to get us anywhere 999 times out of 1,000.

All I know is Norm is a blithering idiot for questioning Garrett.

Yeah, I noticed that too. You can bet Troy would have been livid, but then people here would just have said he is a Cowboys hater and secret Eagles fan. ;)

Norm is 100% Correct. The Truth hurts and Garrett is not man enough to admit his stipidity. He does not trust his QB at all and he is playing not to lose. Red ***** is "Princeton Smart - Football Stupid".

Distance and time were certainly different at the end of the 2 halves. It seemed clear to everybody that I was watching with (again all "fans" in the pejorative sense), that Jason seemed to be playing not to loose that big 7 point lead he had going into half time rather than at least going for a manageable 3. Runs and dinks and passes out of bounds. Maybe it was just poor execution on the Otree and Bryant passes, but there seemed to be no sense of urgency to get to the LOS etc.
