Norm Hitzges tears Jason Garrett a new one

I know its easy to look at the loss in the Cardinal game and the narrow victories against Miami and Washington and say the team is underperforming, but maybe we need to consider the possibility that the team may not have as much talent and potential as we would like to believe. Maybe we still have some building to do to reach that point.

So I am clear, I am not saying we don't have talent and potential, and I'm not saying the coaching isn't a factor that may have hurt at times. What I'm saying is that I don't know that we can really claim the talent and potential is so great that we should be breezing through teams like AZ, Miami and Washington.

;)

They are just now learning as a team...I have to see what kind of team it turns out to be at the end of the season.

Totally different circumstances. That play against Washington was right before the half. The play that was called and resulted in a fumble didn't make sense because it wasn't going to get us anwhere on the last play of the half. The brain fart Sunday was at the very end of regulation when the game WAS on the line. You can't coach scared, which is IMO one of Garrett's biggest obstacles right now. He's coaching not to make mistakes and it's absolutely obvious. Even what he said after the game proves as much. You will not be successful coaching that way.

Great point. People keep making a big deal about how he didn't trust Romo in the NE game. He hasn't trusted his OL for 2 years. At times, it's clear he hasn't trusted his defense. It limits what he does, and the plays he calls. I think it's one of the big reasons he doesn't seem to show much urgency during 2-minute situations. He doesn't want his offense to make a mistake, and he doesn't trust his defense to keep the other team from scoring.

I think this is exactly the case. We like to assume the team is capable of more right now, but we may have to accept that it is still a work in progress.

There's some merit to that.

It shouldn't have come down to the last minute of the game.

This team had 10 days to prepare for the Cardinals, who really are not a very good team.

Certainly the coaching staff deserves blame.

But the execution by many of the players was abysmal.

For the offense to only score 13 points is very disappointing.

This seems to be every game anymore.

The part I will never be able to understand ......
  • 5 years as OC, with very mixed results at best, and he "still needs to learn game management."
  • Yet, he had the OC job so "down cold" that the owner thought he deserves a promotion, yet his old job still keeps coming back to kill this team (13 points against THE CARDINALS)
I really can't think of another coach in the league that gets the benefit of the doubt more than Garrett has had in his entire career. Garrett couldn't hold Sean Payton pee bucket, yet he is called the next great football mind by most here.

Ultimiately, this is on Jerry Jones. He started to tingle after hearing the words, process, stacking, building, evaluating, etc. He couldn't remember the Brad Johnson, Felix Jones 0 carries at Wash 08, etc, etc, etc.

I have said it for a year, this Ivy league ego / double speak will NEVER admit he was wrong. I work with these people daily, and they assign blame to inanimate entities and masters at passively assigning blame to others.

He states he didn't trust a negative play (negaitve thought process) on Offense (his side of the ball). So he "can't answer if Tony could.." , "Saw the 30", etc, etc, etc

:puke:

Agree with every word you've spoken...

A lot of what he says I agree with. Some of it is just over dramatized 20/20 hindsight though. Mean to tell me a coach never changes his mind about whether to go for it on 4th down? I can't tell you how many times, in every single NFL season, a coach sends a play in on 4th down, calls timeout, we come back from commercial and they are now punting. Happens over and over again.

What Norm does here is the easist thing in the world to do. Playing to the mob.

We are 4 of our last 5.
We are in 1st place

Maybe Norm should coach them?

Playing to the mob? You have to be kidding. Not one person on NFL network, ESPN or anywhere else were able to justify Garretts mindset on the last drive of regulation. Garrett simply doesn't trust his own offense and he's obviously coaching not to lose. The pattern was set as far back as the Jets game. He trys to come across as tough but he's coaching like a wuss. It is what it is. Winning 4 out of five against subpar teams doesn't buy him a pass.

when?

10 years in? 20?

Didn't take Tomlin long

this is the thing i don't understand about some of the garrett defenders.

first of all, garrett has been here for years...YEARS! stop acting like jerry pulled jason out of class at princeton to coach this damn team.

he was here for years, he knows the personnel, they know him. he took the job knowing all the pressures of the position and when he did that he made a pact that he is ready to coach and handle OC duties together.

the excuse that he is young...and will learn does not hold water completely when you see young coaches around the league like harbaugh and tomlin winning big IMMEDIATELY.

we fired wade because this team was undisciplined, unprepared, and a running joke of the league by the end of last season. i didn't expect to see these same characteristics in the team once garrett started running the team. remember in the offseason all the talk about the disciplinarian, the task master, the attention to detail...where is it?

I'm glad the Cowboys especially Garrett is getting RIPPED!! for this debacle.

From the FANS
TO the MEDIA
From EX-Coaches

We are the laughing stock of the NFL right now...

NO purpose
Confusion
indecision
uncertainty

Call it what you will this tells you Garrett can't manage
this team by himself..

He has PROVEN time and time again....to be
an incapable OC for this team
with so many DAM weapons this guy has a horrible
red zone percentage...

3RD and 1 pass twice??????????????????

WTH

I'm glad were getting RIPPED let the bleeding continue...

ok so let me get this straight.

Garrett doesn't trust his quarterback to put the dagger into tom brady and the patriots.

Garrett doesn't trust his offensive line to not create a negative play in those final 20 seconds and doesn't trust them to run on goalline situations (jets game) and on 3rd/4th and 1.

Garrett doesn't trust his defense to stop the opposing offense in case his offense sputters in a 2 minute drill at the end of the half or game.

in summary he doesn't trust the qb, offensive line, and defense. if Garrett came into this season with this much uncertainty in his team why did he kill off our entire oline and why did he bring back nearly every starter in the defense? why doesn't he just start looking for a romo replacement? i'm serious, you cannot win when you coach with this much fear every single game. you cannot have that much weakness pervading from your supposed leader and expect to win in this league..

I've heard Norm get pretty animated about thngs in the past, but I can't recall when I've ever heard him be this point blank.

He sounded like me right after the game.:D

Right between the eyes.

Or Tom Landry?
Tom Landry wouldn't last 1/2 a season today in Big D... Oh, wait...

i am so split on this, while at first i wanted Garrett gone, i dont know maybe i do want that young coach whos going to stick around for years, and just go thru the lumps with them and some days id just wish hed go into JJs office, shake his hand and leave. For that to really make sense, we'd have to do that with every coach afterwards and i dont want to do that.

Who thinks Garret is redeemable? and worth the headaches this season and possibly do better with the coaching staff and players next year?

Norm spit a mouthful of Beechnut in Garrett's eye. Bravo.

"I can't trust you to run straight ahead smash play. I can't trust you."

Have another plug Norm, I'll get you a bottle of water. You've said nothing but the honest truth.

Garrett needs to be put in a room and listen to all of that until he can admit to at least one of the multiple screw ups on his part. :bang2: :banghead:

This is good. It's not the first time he's made very questionable decisions. This has been going on for 4 years now. He needs to be scrutinized and torn apart. There is a great candidate in Fisher waiting in the wings, and Harbaugh was ours to be had last offseason. There's no time to waste on this ginger clown. We have some great players in their primes right now.

If Denver's coaches can create a whole new playbook for their QB mid-season, then I'm assuming there's a decent enough coach who can be very successful with Romo. We'll never know unless we cut ties with ginger though.

Harbaugh was only going to leave Stanford for one job, SF. He used Miami to get a better offer from the Niners. He wasn't moving his family from the Bay Area.

Garrett is going to take some heat for sure and deserves some for sure. However, I had no problem with him running the bend zone to Murray against the Patriots. Brandon Spikes totally blew up Costa or it's probably a first down. Romo was coming off a historic melt-down against the Lions and almost threw two or three more interceptions with pressure in his face that day. Garrett couldn't afford to stand there and watch Romo give another game away at that point.

I totally understand why Garrett didn't try to get the 49 yard FG closer, and I agree with Eric Mangini. Dallas had a false start and a delay of game penalty right before, and Garrett rightfully wanted his very good kicker to take the last shot in a tie game.

Dallas probably should have called a timeout after Dez Bryant's clutch catch, and I still say Garrett fell victim to his special teams coaches screwing him up, through their own panic.

My biggest issue is this:

42 passes...and bomb happy...

5 runs in the second half (1 for Jones, his longest of the game at 11 yards)

Felix Jones 6.0 YPC (6-36) LG 11 16-77 (4.8) in 2010 @ Arizona

Knowing how very good Felix Jones ran and played at Arizona last year and standing there watching Jones average 6.0 YPC against their defense, Dallas' coaches don't challenge the Cardinals to stop a hot Felix Jones...The Cardinals sure seem to have some problems with Jones' speed and quickness through the hole and his speed and quickness, period. (see Jones' 69 yard kickoff return) Someone left Darnell Dockett completely unblocked, or Jones would have had more rushing yards.

If Felix Jones gets 12-13 rushes in that game, that game could have been played different, imo. Instead, you have 5 sacks and a bunch of incomplete passes. Also, you probably have a cleaner game for Romo and the offensive line if Jones rushes that football within his proven extremely explosive and extremely productive rush range. Where were the screens to Jones against constant middle blitzes?

8 trips into Arizona territory and 13 points...

That is pathetic, and that was the game.

Scandrick's penalty was a killer, because that was the game, too.

If Garrett can beat:

Giants
Bucs
Eagles

He can redeem himself, imo.

However, he better start feeding Felix Jones the rock, or his road is going to be very dicey, imso.

Sometimes the mob is right. Garrett has some issues right now, does not mean he will not be a good HC in the future, imo, he will, these are fixable issues, but he needs to be honest with himself (even if not with the media, thats fine) and work on these things, I have no idea whether he does or not, I assume with a guy like him he absolutely does, time will tell.

So garrett screwed up, don't defend him when he actually screws up, it makes the other times when you legitimately defend him less effective (ie. mediots calling him out for his personality:rolleyes:).
