Not Knocking Wade, But Why Did He Accept The Penalty On 4th Down?...

...I still haven't figured that one out.

It was 4th and 2 after the 3rd down play, it was in Philly territory and it was in the first half. So Philly wasn't going for it on 4th down.

I understand field position and all of that but you just don't give a team another play on 3rd down, especially with the officials being quick with the flag. I was scared to death we were going to get a ticky tack 5 yard holding call and give them an automatic first down.

I think Wade got away with one there.

He made several head scratching calls in my opinion. That was one of the first ones. I came out of my chair.

I agree, and when McNabb let loose on that throw I thought it was a 1st down. Don't know why he took it unless he thought they might go for it on 4th down. At that spot on the field I doubt he would have though.

agreed, but we are not on the sideline and have the fans cheering, all the players, coordination of the team and still figuring out whats on the field. Easy to scratch head on the couch. Hopefully he doesnt do it again or someone has to learn to whisper in his ear.

I thought the play was killed because of a false start. Since the false start occurred before the snap, there was no real play. Maybe it was blown dead at that point and Wade had no choice?

That was very dicey. Philly was almost assuredly going to punt. I was bracing myself for one of those "5-yard, automatic first down, hands to the face" penalties by one of our DBs.

It was a 5 yard penalty (illegal formation, which you CAN decline), making it 3rd and 23. They gained 21 yards of field position and the possibility of them converting that 3rd down is miniscule.

I understand the reasoning, though I don't know if I would have had the guts to do the same.

The challenge of the McNabb Td pass was another concerning call. He was clearly behind the LOS. That was a real hail Mary challenge with no rational basis made on pure emotion. It ended up costing us a challenge and a time out. Good thing for us, the other team's coach was even less rational with his challenges. :D

Yeah, I agree. That would had me angry when he did it. It was clearly a punting down, and now you've given them an opportunity. All it would take was a holding call, illegal contact, or a pass interference and they would have gotten a 1st down.

I agree I think it was a bit too risky. I felt Dallas should have declined the penalty. I have yet to hear a reporter ask about it I would be interested to hear his reasoning.

It was 1 foot, the rest of his body was pass the LOS.

Correct call, yes, but it was close.

Just the fact that Donovan Mcnabb is responsible for not only the famous 4th and 26 and also the 14 second scramble he had against us would make me most definitely not let them replay that 3rd down. It was a bad decision. At best is was going to gain us 15 yards of field position. The possible negative outcomes could've been much worse.

That one is not on Wade. It's from someone up in the box looking at it. Wade has to take their word for it.

Field position. It was risky, and it could've blown up in our face, but I see why he did it.

I liked the call.

I was wanting him to accept the penalty and us possibly get the ball at midfield.

With the way our defense was playing i'd take my chances on them holding on 3rd and a mile if the reward got me 20 yards farther upfield.

It showed that Wade had faith in our defense, which I'm sure made them feel great. I'm assuming he felt that our defense was controlling the Philly offense for the most part minus the big dump off pass.

i was mad when he accepted but you have to back your defense to stop 4th and 23 and the net result for an incompletion is 20 yards gain for us.

It's a way of showing the defense that you have confidence in them..

I like Wade but I just disagree on this call. A simple penalty could have cost us an automatic 1st down even if Philly came up short. I think it was not worth the risk.

I think Wade had a brain fart on that one,a defensive penalty could have gave them a first down thus extending the drive.I can see having faith in your defense to stop them and gain better field position, but with a "flag happy" officiating crew that was a risky move that could have resulted in disaster.
