Not Knocking Wade, But Why Did He Accept The Penalty On 4th Down?...

That was a dumb arse call, the Birds were going to punt and we gave them a "free play" basically.

I know what the rational is, if the pass is incomplete then they have to punt from 15 yards back or so. The risk vs reward in that situation is just not worth it.

Sorry, but you are dead wrong. Virtually all his body was over the line and several players saw it, thats why it was challenged.

It was a good challenege.

He was clearly behind the line of scrimmage. There is no such thing as a "technicality of the rule." Coaches get paid to know what those are. It was a total waste of a time out and a challenge. You don't challenge something, hoping to get lucky. The chances of that getting overturned were incredibly small. Good thing for Wade, Reid made 2 challenge calls worse than his.

I dont know what you are looking at, they showed the replay several times, and almost his entire body was over the line, which is what I saw live and what several other players clearly saw. The only reason it wasnt overturned is because the toe of his foot wasnt completely over the line.

The play was a TD on a 3rd down play, how anyone can argue that it isnt worth challenging when it was clearly very close is beyond me. Wade';s challenge potentially could have saved 4 pts, and possibly 7 had the kicker missed the FG or had it blocked.

from my take on it...it was either 4th and very short near midfield, if we didnt accept the penalty.....or 3rd and forever if we did accept the penalty.

now judging by Reid and his love for rolling the dice, they might have gone for it on 4th and short.

Cowboys knew McNabb was short

November 9, 2009, 5:46 PM

By: Calvin Watkins

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said he was pretty confident Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was short on a fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter, one of Dallas' several key defensive stands from Sunday night's victory.

Eagles coach Andy Reid challenged the play and lost, and it cost his team its final timeout with 10:49 remaining.

Phillips said he had a good view of the play because he was standing next to the side judge when it unfolded.

"Timeouts, obviously you can see how important they are," Phillips said. "But they still had an opportunity to stop us, but we made the plays at the end of the ballgame.

"Challenges can cost you timeouts. It depends on whether you need them or not at the end of the game. Most of the games that are close, you need your timeouts, so you have to be very careful with it. You still have to go with what the people upstairs say. We've got Sunday Night Football, and you get all the camera views."

Phillips also lost a challenge on a play. He thought McNabb's forward progress on a touchdown pass advanced past the line of scrimmage in the third quarter. The 11-yard pass to tight end Brent Celek was ruled good on the field and after a review by the officials the play was upheld. It was the first time this year Phillips lost a challenge.

"Our guys [in the press box] were 'He's absolutely past the line of scrimmage.' Well, his ankle wasn't so, that cost us a timeout," Phillips said.

Yes, it was very close, but it was also very obvious. Almost doesn't count.

It's a no brainer - 4th and 2 in their own end of the field, you decline and they will punt. Football 101 - why would you give them another chance when you just stopped them???

...I still haven't figured that one out.

It was 4th and 2 after the 3rd down play, it was in Philly territory and it was in the first half. So Philly wasn't going for it on 4th down.

I understand field position and all of that but you just don't give a team another play on 3rd down, especially with the officials being quick with the flag. I was scared to death we were going to get a ticky tack 5 yard holding call and give them an automatic first down.

I think Wade got away with one there.
at least he didn't kick a field goal down 7 with no time outs left.
