If there is an area that Jason Witten has improved in with his age, it has been his run blocking. His strength and body positioning has been outstanding, but his best trait in my eyes has been his ability to finish those blocks. In these past two games, his point of attack blocking is right where it needs to be and you can see the results with your own eyes in the way this team is running the ball. When you want to be critical of Jason Witten and say that he might be slowing down, you might want to step back and take a look at the whole picture.
Interesting perspective of JWit and one those who are throwing dirt at him should take note of.

  • After watching Tony Romo play these last two weeks, I am curious if the reasoning of his lack of velocity at times on his passes is due more to his legs than his back? If he was having issues with his back, I just don’t believe you would be seeing him handle these zone plays in the running game as well as he has -- where has to meet these backs at the mesh point. If he was slow or struggling you could clearly see that. Romo said he has strengthened his core, but I am concerned that his legs and the way that he uses them in throwing the ball are not physically where they need to be quite yet. He uses his legs to set up and drive the ball. Something worth keeping an eye on.

I think it was @Zordon who said Romo needs to get in the weight room, this tidbit from Broaddus lends credence to that

Also I'm not typically a fan of experimenting with CB's at safety, but I dont think letting Moore get a few snaps there is the worst idea ever

I mentioned the same thing in another thread.

Wilcox doesn't look ready and I'd like to see more of Moore in his place.

Interesting, he is basically advocating bumping Mo down to #4 CB with Carr, Scandrick, and Moore ahead of him.

His back probably wasn't ready to squat or clean in the offseason.

there are exercises to strictly isolate the legs like hack squats and leg extensions.

he also had no issue playing basketball and indoor soccer throughout the spring.

plus simply losing some weight would help his conditioning. he needs to realize he's getting older and the status quo isn't going to work anymore. he needs to do something differently.

Good stuff to know.
Lets start a "Zordon for Romo personal trainer" deal, send it to JJ, get this QB in shape....woicek not doing his job for sure...
I know it takes times though.

We've been trying to throw dirt on Witten's blocking around here for the last three years for some reason. I don't get it. He's an all-around TE. He's been one his whole career, and he's still doing it at a high level. He's only 32 years old.

We talked about putting Moore in at S on this board a few years back before we drafted Wilcox. I thought it was a good idea then, and I'd be open to seeing it in some packages again now. The more good cover guys we can get on the field, the better. Especially if our LBs continue to tackle well and play with some range in the passing game.

Legs are always the first thing to go on aging QBs.

I think the issue is Tony's legs, too. Though it makes sense in his case that the problem is probably related to the restrictions from his rehab and not the sudden onset of age. He just doesn't look comfortable throwing right now. And there are even times when he's forcing balls with his arm with his feet not set. Part of it was us reacting to aggressive blitzing last week, but part of it is just him looking ginger out there early in the year.

For him, that is far more important than simply hitting the gym. He needs functional strength more than he needs pure weight strength. I'd bet that his lack of footwork is still a mental thing and maybe conditioning, more than it is a lack of pure strength. When your mind is slow, your body is going to be too.

Or....his mechanics are off because of a degenerative back condition. Short balls fly over people, medium passes hit people in the feet, long passes flutter and fall short. If he's going to have any shot at all, get him a damn QB coach.

But leg extensions are crap and don't do anything for you athletically. Anything isolating the legs is pretty worthless, except for bodybuilding.

The concern I'd have is that he might be under orders to not ever lift heavy again. Or, maybe he'll be able to at some point. None of us really know.

Hey only so much Woicik can do. The player has to want to do it as well.

If I'm Romo I look at my contract and my desire to live up to it so I make some changes. I get down to 220-225. I do more HIIT training, squats, cleans, deadlifts, core work....this has to be a 24/7/365 thing. When players report next year, I don't want to hear about Romo being 240 lbs again. It's ridiculous to be at that weight for 2 straight years when you are getting older and have back issues. If he loses some pounds and works his legs especially like Parcells had his QBs do, he will prolong his career.
