Notes from Broaddus

there are exercises to strictly isolate the legs like hack squats and leg extensions.

he also had no issue playing basketball and indoor soccer throughout the spring.

plus simply losing some weight would help his conditioning. he needs to realize he's getting older and the status quo isn't going to work anymore. he needs to do something differently.

If anyone listened to Micheal Straham's HOF speech he thanked Bruce Smith for advising him to loose weight as he got towards the end of his career.

I think it was @Zordon who said Romo needs to get in the weight room, this tidbit from Broaddus lends credence to that

I would think he would've done a lot of core work this offseason with that type of surgery.

His feet look like the problem to me and that's always been his strength.

I'd imagine it's pretty hard to work your legs while recovering from back surgery, so it wouldn't surprise me.

None of that matters anymore. He is DONE. He is easily one of the weakest links on the team which means we will go no where as long as he is the QB.

You'd think it couldn't, but I have to admit, it caught me by surprise, too.

I understand some legit concerns some have on Romo after coming off back surgery I also know those who have been yapping about Romo for a while so seeing their comments was to be expected.
As for Romo true condition I don't think anyone here knows enough about Romo situation to know what is going on. Myself I think if the back was a problem he would not have been looking much better in the 2nd half after taking 3 sacks in the 1st half as well as the knock downs. I certainly would not think he would throw a perfect strike on a 3rd and 15 on the move as he did to convert the 3rd down. I think Romo after a poor showing vs 9ers was being very cautious early in the game, guiding balls instead of making the throws In my view I think Romo does need more time to get back into the groove and between games and full work week he is doing now that he will step up for this team.

Interesting perspective of JWit and one those who are throwing dirt at him should take note of.

I'm not sure, but I believe as a male ages his power increases while athletic ability decreases. Witten may reinvent himself and remain productive for another ten years folks. He's that durable of a player.

Interesting theory on Romo, being his legs and not his back.
Getting in shape.

One thing that bothered me alot with Romo is that he looked always out of shape in the last 4-5 years. And it got worse and worse.
I question his preparation for the season in his off time. Playing basketball on a mediocre level or Golf doesnt do the trick.

It was ok without major injuries. But with those - especially with serious back problems - it shows if you have build a good physical fundament in the past or just laid back in the offseason. And it shows if he knows what to do ti bring himself back to physical form. Which i dont think.because imo he never spent much time about the question how to really get in football shape.

I've posted this in another thread.

Parcells and Testaverde were big on QBs doing heavy squats to keep in shape and improve the zip on their passes. Romo learn this from them when they were here but probably wasn't able to past few off seasons due to his back surgeries.

Here is the article.

Testaverde's workout regimen key to his longevity

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Vinny Testaverde jokes never seem to stop. He once handed off to Bronko Nagurski. He was in the same draft class as Y.A. Tittle.

Funny thing though, the jokes end when the 44-year-old quarterback walks into the Carolina Panthers weight room -- and starts doing squats with the linemen.

"I don't think there is any quarterback that I've been around that works as hard as Vinny -- and definitely not as strong," said Jerry Simmons, the Panthers strength and conditioning coach.

It's probably no surprise that two of Testaverde's closest friends in the NFL are Simmons and Arizona strength and conditioning coach John Lott. He met Simmons when they were together with the Cleveland Browns in the early 1990s, and Lott when they were with the New York Jets in the late '90s.

Testaverde has combined their two philosophies into a weight-training and conditioning program that is the key to Testaverde being the oldest NFL starting quarterback to win a game.

While many men his age were sitting on the couch Sunday working on their beer guts, Testaverde was throwing two touchdown passes to move past Joe Montana into eighth place on the career list with 275.
Testaverde's tireless workout regimen includes cardiovascular exercises and lifting, specifically squats for strength in his legs.

"People see quarterbacks and they think, 'Oh, he has a strong arm.' But really the strength in your arm doesn't just come from your arm," Testaverde said. "It comes from your hips and your legs. I think the squatting has helped me tremendously to stay healthy and to have that longevity."

Vinny's squat presses are legendary.

Be honest, I'm not overly concerned with Romo's physical situation. He is what he is and he will either make it through the season or not. Can't worry about that, at this point IMO. The time for doing things to improve that situation has come and gone. Will have to be a next off season thing.

I'm more concerned with Romo realizing his limitations and adjusting his game to suit them. Don't throw into windows you shouldn't. Don't make throws that require physical capabilities you don't have. Those kinds of adjustments, together with continued success in the run game should allow this offense to be successful IMO.

That might not be exactly the case for Romo. Aikman said that when he had his back surgery it took until the 2nd half of games for
his back to really loosen up. It might be that it just takes Romo a fair amount of game action before he gets in the groove for his
footwork and throwing motion to get in sync. From what I could see on his bad passes Sunday, he wasn't exactly setting up like a QB
should. Romo might not ever again be able to scramble and miss like he could a couple of year ago. He has always seemed to be able
to throw on the run and with just arm strength but those days might become a fond memory.

FWIW, Jerry mentioned that Romo's issues are primarily related to his footwork. We can call it what we want, but I just think it's all about getting him the reps he needs to get back to normal.

I agree. You can see the hesitation on some throws that are under 15 yards. I think with more time the game will slow down for him again.

We will have to see. One thing for sure how one person situation compared to another is not always the same. Aikman issue also was dealing with a degenerative back issues.

After two games where he showed significant improvement after the first, I don't know.

He didn't look any better to me. Throws still had no zip on them and he looked slow as molasses. Sure, his game dramatically improved from the worst game he ever had but does that say much? Our running game was really clicking and our defense played well, that is a big part of the reason we won.
