But there is no "accidently" in that rule. That's the point. There was a kid thrown out of a Pitt game last year when he dove at a RBs' legs but the RB dove too and they collided. Kid was tossed because that's how the rule was written.

UT got a big break there as ND should have had the ball first and goal. Probably wouldn't have mattered as ND's defense was a hot mess all night and UT could have kept scoring.
You want targeting...that the LSU player did after the Wisconsin int to seal the game....he should be suspended. If i were his coach, i would suspend him for 2 games and force him to perform campus clean up duties for a month. Also, write a letter of apology to the player he went after, the coach of the player, the school, and the player's parents, so 4 letters.

It was a good football hit. It also was targeting. Unfortunately in today's game there are good hits that fall under the umbrella of the targeting rule.

I understand what they are trying to accomplish with the targeting rule, but it goes a bit overboard and falls a little outside the realm of the reality of the game. Football is a brutal sport. There are hits in football that occur when the defender has no true ill intention, but the hit is still punishing. That is the nature of the sport.

The rule goes overboard to me because they suspend defenders for these hits. There is no equity to it. Offensive players aren't likely to get thrown out of games. Now defenders can get thrown out for trying to make a play at full speed that looks horrible in slow motion.

The rule is the rule and I've seen many similar hits that drew the penalty. Many similar hits that have been used as the textbook example of targeting.

For decades defensive coaches teach their players to try to dislodge the ball. That's textbook on what the UT player did. There was a ton of flags throughout the game but none on that play. Why? Because the hit was legal. It's too bad Hunter Jr. got hurt on the play, but that's football.

Should have been a late hit/targeting flag here that would have eliminated the interception. Things equal out

Not even close. The hit on Buechele was legal, and had no head contact.

The hit in the end zone is the very definition of targeting. The receiver wasn't in a position to defend himself, and he took a shot to the head. At the very least, it warranted a review. The officials couldn't even be bothered with that.

That being said, Kelly screwed up by not naming Kizer as the starter and eliminating the stupid rotation with him and Zaire, and VanGorder couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. The only thing that led to them losing in OT as opposed to regulation was the chop block penalty on Texas. VanGorder's defenses have allowed 132 points in the last three games played - absolutely horrid.

ND should have went for 2 after they scored their TD in OT.

It's already been established it wasn't targeting.

People can cry about this missed flag or that. There were missed calls on both sides. It happens to every team in every game. Just like how we won't mention in the first OT, Notre Dame had 3 lineman 5 yards down the field when the ball was passed (and they were not engaged in a block). The rule allows 3 yards. Penalty missed that would have backed up Notre Dame and taken away the touchdown with Texas up 7. Was a great game, refs will always miss calls. I'm a Texas fan and I do think that the replay officials should have at the very least taken a look at the targeting hit. If it's replay able how do you no take a look? Bottom line: Texas won. Notre Dame lost.

The actual rule book.

You may want to read the rule book.

RULES

Targeting and Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet (Rule 9-1-3)

No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player (Rule 9-1-4)

No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 2-27-14)

Note: Beginning in 2013, ejection from the game is a part of the penalty for violation of both Rule 9-1-3 and Rule 9-1-4.

The bolded in Rule 9-1-4 is exactly what happened.

I like Zaire a lot - the kid is a gamer and a great leader.

It's just that Kizer has it. He doesn't get fazed at all by situations. The team clearly responded better to him last night.

Zaire didn't look particularly pleased last night, and I can easily see him transferring at years end as a graduate student. I believe he's on track to graduate this season.

Nah. You have to see the other angle. Here's a link with the replay. 27 seconds into the video.

Clearly helmet to helmet. Play should have been reversed and a first down for Texas.
