I was talking about the first deal, similar to first deal for hurts. the 17,19,26 were first three years cap hit in the first contract Dak got. not this one, which is the second contract and has to absorb money from the first contract. No, he couldn't have. Dak insisting on a shorter term deal took that off the table.
Jerry is terrible at this and Dak is greedy. Those things can both be true, and they are. This whole Dak contract thingie has been grossly mismanaged by both sides. The way they're doing it makes it certain that they won't win. There's just no way you can shove the 89 mil into a shorter term contract and be able to contend for the big prize. The current Dak deal should've been like 6-8 years, longer the better. That was the only way it was going to work.
BTW, people keep glossing over the fact that prior to year 4 of his career, Dak agreed on a contract, and then renegged. It's so weird that no one remembers it, it was huge news at the time.
for Hurts, the 3rd and 4th year after the first two have 31 and 42M cap hit. similar to Dak and I am sure if it gets redone, money gets pushed. then comes his second contract and assuming similarly its larger and has to absorb money from first contract. numbers will differ for his second contract compared to the first.
so trying to compare apples to apples....first contract to first contract....
and I agree, I wanted to see a longer term contract for the second one as well, even if it was fake 2 years at the end to allow money to be spread (bonuses through restructure) and allow for easier cap management if Jerry was serious.. so not sure why they didn't do it that way. was it Jerry? or Dak? I didn't see much details until the contract was done an hour before first game.
this is not to mean I am defending Dak and his contracts. just looking at data and making comparisons.
and the last two years of his old contract where voidable years, put in place to spread money and manage the cap.
in a way I was not opposed to shorter contract....why? because it gave you an early out. but Jerry insisted on resigning Dak, where he could have walked away. that was Jerry's mistake and jerry's choice. he had ZERO QBs under contract for 25....that's stupid. he gave Dak and his agent all the leverage. for the second time.
