Nugget from The Ringer about Cowboys offense

The Cowboys traded receiver Amari Cooper and did little to replace him. Right now, the depth chart is CeeDee Lamb, rookie Jalen Tolbert and Noah Brown, who has 39 career catches. Maybe Tolbert will be great right away, but over the last 10 years, the median production for third-round picks during their rookie seasons has been 200 total receiving yards.

Any expectation that Tolbert can handle the #2 role until Gallup back should be quashed at this point if history is any indicator.

It's almost criminal that Jerry and Stephen seem to think WR is just in great shape at this point. They are assuming Gallup will be back in a few weeks after the season starts AND he'll just pick up right where he left off.

They are gambling at the WR position. And if Lamb were to get hurt for a game or two early, wooo boy.

EDIT: Before the homers get wound up, I am not suggesting Tolbert isn't good or whatever. But he is what he is - a third round rookie WR. They don't typically hit right away and take time to develop. It's almost unfair to the kid to expect him to fill that #2 role effectively until Gallup is back and proves he's 100% healthy.

They're not trying to win this year but they can't say that out loud. It was obvious from the moment they dumped Cooper for nothing and extended Gallup knowing he'd be no where near ready for the start of the season.

they were gambling that Washington was going to be the stop gap - when he got injured they lost that bet, they are now in a bad position and i would not be surprised to see a 1 dimensional offense that struggles until about week 3 / 4....feeling an 0-2 or 0-3 start is a pretty real possibility. I am hopeful the young guys step up as well and the other issue is there really aren't a whole lot of guys on the street that are options either because of age, skill set or drama issues.

Moore is going to have to get creative....

Before the haters piggy back on this, how about giving the WR group a chance to see wha they do. :muttley::popcorn:

LOL.

You guys trot out this logic all the time. Hey, let's see what they have. And then when it's obvious they are short, oh well.

The WRs, currently, are a middle of the pack NFL group, at best until Gallup comes back and proves he's healthy. Only homers who keep thinking everything the Cowboys touch is great think otherwise.

No, No, No....the RINGER knows all.

lol

You are a funny guy because you are the guy who defended Dak by arguing Dallas didn't give him enough a good enough OL or weapons. And then when people point out that they are short at WR (and they are), you go into Cowboys defense mode. And if Dak scuffles early, you'll be hear lamenting how our WRs aren't good enough and other problems that aren't Dak's fault.

And the more important thing the Ringer said was that it's unlikely that any 3rd round rookie WR can make the impact that Dallas is currently expecting out of Tolbert.

Better than constantly whining about everything.
I don't live my life and go through each day with a cloud over my head.

Part of the fun is seeing how they play coming out of TC and see how they progress and improve. Does it always happen, no, but many times it also happens.

The Cowboys are going to be a running team this season, at least until Gallup gets back. Romo said it, Jerry said it and the fact that we drafted a run blocking guard with the first pick sealed it. The Cowboys I think are copying the 49ers. Strong pass rush, run the ball and toughness. The Jeff Cavanaughs of the world won’t like it but the Cowboys will be better off in playoffs.

BC i believe he has plenty of weapons this year.

When i made that argument in 2018, they clearly did not.

A pro bowl WR, a Franchise TE, and a Pollard used more in the pass game is a lot of good weapons.

The other guys have to hold the fort. Not to mention, everyone acts like Gallup is out of the year, he will mist a few games at most.

I have confidence that the OL will be better than it has been since Fred retired.

BTW, the last 3rd round WR Dak played with had over 500 yards. So much for that theory.

Are the WRs underwhelming? Yep. Can they score points? Probably. Difference this year is our D. Might be one of the better units in the NFL. We shall see.
After the 49rs debacle… my interest has been low.

Ya see Sydla. If it’s the beginning of the league year. You can’t criticize about free agent acquisitions or lack thereof because “they still have the draft”

then if it’s the draft. You can’t criticize picks because “we haven’t seen them play yet”

then if it’s training camp you can’t criticize because “the season hasn’t started yet”

then if it’s during the season and the cowboys are losing. You can’t criticize because “the season isn’t over yet”

Really you only have about 1 week per year you can criticize without being a hater. Right after the season ends in failure yet again.

once that week is over it’s “stop focusing on the past they can contend next year”

rinse and repeat

I disagree, jones boys are trying to win.
Jerry got mad at Amari, and that is why he is gone.
They wanted to keep Cedrik, but only if he would take their lowball offer.
And they do think Gallup will be as he was before he got hurt, and they can get by without him till he gets back.
They think CD is as good as Amari or better, and with no Amari he can get more targets.

And they probably think out of the rest 2 or more will be ready to fill Cedriks role and more.
And lastly they dont fill they need to pay for any other WR, as they like their guys.

Use common sense, their is no reason to try not to win, but try to win and wind up 8-9 !
The only reason would be to get a high draft pick, by tanking better than 8-9.

So they are trying to win, and they think what they are doing is right and smart lol.

Gallup was a 3rd rounder. Just 33 catches, 507 yards, and 2 TDs his rookie year. Probably be lucky to see similar production from Tolbert. Gallup didn't have Cooper for the first part of his rookie year to take targets away like CeeDee will do for Tolbert.

In all truth our #2 WR is a TE.

How did Gallup do in those first 4-5 games? The expectations are Gallup could miss 3-5 weeks at the start of the season. So how did Gallup do those first 5 games?

6 catches, 92 yards. Total.

If the Cowboys are banking on Tolbert being a legit #2 for the first quarter of the season, that's an issue.

Gallup's production mostly came in the 2nd half of the season.

My issue is what are they doing at WR for the first 4-5 weeks? It seems they are hoping to tread water, get Gallup back and he won't show any side effects from coming off a major knee surgery. I think that's a mistake. Tolbert as the 3 or 4th WR? That's fine.

I'd bring Fuller in. He'll be cheap and likely healthy for like 3-4 games, he'll get hurt but then Gallup will be back. LOL.
