Chiefs DE Allen to serve 48 hours of jail time

NFL.com wire reports

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (Jan. 4, 2007) -- Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen will spend 48 hours in jail after a municipal judge revoked an earlier agreement and found Allen guilty of driving under the influence.

Allen, who was charged with a DUI in May, was initially given a deal to have the charge dismissed if he completed a program. But on Sept. 26, he was charged with a second offense in nearby Leawood.

Prosecutors moved to negate the agreement, and on Wednesday the judge agreed, finding Allen guilty and sentencing him to jail time.

He must report to the Johnson County Jail on Feb. 16, Court Administrator Robin Barnard said.

As part of a plea agreement, Allen was also fined $500, given a suspended 90-day jail sentence and placed on one year's probation.

He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 14 on the Leawood charge.

The only place I saw it was in the KC press today, stuck amongst the "Herm Says We're Not Just 'Lucky' " articles.

KC’s Allen will serve jail time

Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen was ordered Wednesday to serve 48 hours in jail after a judge revoked a diversion program related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Allen, who was found guilty of the charge of driving under the influence, will enter the Johnson County Jail for a 48-hour period beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 16. As part of a plea agreement, Allen was placed on probation for one year and fined $500. The penalty includes a suspended sentence of 90 days in jail. If Allen violates his probation, he will be subject to serving the full sentence.

Allen, 24, was granted diversion in July after being stopped at 5:37 a.m. May 11 at 135th Street and U.S. 69 in Overland Park. Typically, if such a court program is completed successfully, the charges are dismissed.

After Allen was charged Sept. 26 with driving under the influence in Leawood, Overland Park prosecutors filed a motion to terminate the diversion program. That was granted Wednesday upon Allen being found guilty.

Allen is expected to be in court on the Leawood charge on Feb. 14.

They rather talk about T.O commenting on Garcia's sexuality or how he "destroyed" the Eagles lockeroom.
Merriman gets caught using steroids yet they glorify him.....maybe even make him defensive player of the year.
Ray Lewis was in the smack dab in the middle of a homicide...yet you see his ugly mug on the NFL network and various other outlets on a second by second basis. Two among hundreads of examples of things far worse than anything T.O has said or done.
It's incredible to me that the media is soooo intent on bringing T.O down, yet seem disinterested in commenting about obvious problems that exist within the NFL community. Seems to me the media would rather chase the easy stories than face the hard ones, especially when the media outlet they work for has a hand in the NFL cookie jar.

True, last night garcia said he felt sorry for owens. Said he was troubled if I remember correctly and then told costas again he felt sorry for him.

That was on inside the nfl.

I just saw it, actually Garcia said he felt sorry about "the whole situation", and that people now understand what comes out of TO's mouth isn't true.

Costas referred to Owens as a "dope" and "universally" considered the league's "laughingstock".

This season, Owens HAS gone from being viewed as malignant to merely absurd, from "cancerous" to a character who causes eyes to roll, but little more.

And Bill's canny handling of him (ignore antics, refuse to comment, no props, no love, no attention) probably aided that beneficial metamorphosis.

The answer is quite simple. It is because the title does not say "Cowboys WR Owens to serve 48 hours of jail time"

BSPN is all too predictable nowadays... Thank goodness for NFLN.

It amazes me how many NFL player arrests get swept under the rug.

The local radio had an interesting discussion about which had the worse image problem, the NBA or NFL. The NBA was the common answer, as one might expect. But when you look around, it's the NFL guys getting arrested more and more (granted, there are a ton more football players than basketball players...not sure what the percentage differential is).

Still, it's like with Merriman's steroid suspsension....swept under the rug. Instead of criticizing his use of steroids, everyone just craved for his return. Now, I've even heard him praised for still playing well after a four-week layoff. Geez.

That's not the lead on SportsCenter for the same reason that me stubbing my toe on my coffee table earlier today isn't on the front page of CNN.com.
