Not to mention the complete racket that is the college bookstore. Changed the example problems in Chapters 10 and 16? That's going to require a new $160 book. It's really getting quite ridiculous. The knowledge you gain in college is hardly +EV(for all you poker players) anymore if you're a business major. I live in Texas and since the only school I wanted to get my bachelor's from was UT, i got denied(with a 3.2 transfer gpa and 1350 old SAT) and will be attending school out of state for a low sum of $28,000 a year. Great.

I for one am glad that something is finally in the works, it's just sad when the administration has to step in because you're gumming up the works that badly. Of course the BCS and the majority of the prime time schools like the current situation, they get automatic bowl bids every year and if they finish undefeated they're guaranteed a shot at the national championship. I wonder if TCU, Cinci, or Boise enjoy the current the current situation.

The sad part is if something is done I could see the state programs shafting the students out of spite. No millions guaranteed from watching our 5th ranked team in the conference play in the toilet bowl? That's a 50% tuition hike, citizen.

damn shame. :(

Joe Guyan, that's a guy you don't hear about every day. I think he played at Carlisle after Thorpe did but he too was a RB I believe.

Good one Dakota.

I tip my hat to you sir! :gent: I'd have bet my last dollar no one would know who he was. He played on the 1912 team with Thorpe and ya, he was a halfback. Then he went on to play for GT and win a national championship in 1917. He was a first team All American at Tackle at GT.

I got a little lucky on this one. I'm a fan of Carlisle back in the day. When I was a kid, I would spend hours reading about some of these guys. I didn't know he also played for Gtech. So that would mean that he probably played for Heisman at GTech. I think he was coaching at Georgia Tech back then.

I didn't know that.

Yep, Heisman was his coach.

My default stance is always keep the government out of something unless there are laws being broken and/or the situation cannot fix itself.

This is a case where both apply.

The BCS may be better than the old bowl system that rearely even pared two of the top teams against each other, but it is still a sham and is illegal to boot. Someday there will a college football title actually won on the playing field. Someday.

The reason the government will look into it is because teams like Boise state had no chance in winning a championship this year even though I believe they could beat Alabama. Now, what does that do? Right, it takes millions and millions of dollars away from Boise State if in fact that could have beaten Alabama.

That my friend is grounds for Antitrust.

I'm with you as far as anti-trust and the BcS. However, except for maybe a handful of schools that have an athletic dept so profitable that it actually helps fund education (see Ohio St and Texas), I think the BCS money goes to athletic budgets only....and does not affect tuition.

Someone obviously is going to have to force College Football to go to a playoff...cause they aren't going to do it on their own.

A playoff is so long overdue it's beyond ridiculous at this point.

Not that it has to do with the cost of tuition, but rather the current Bowl system is all about money for the big schools...

I was just making a side point that state schools are already flooded with money from taxpayers yet raise tuition all of the time...

The academic excuse doesn't cut it...

I don't believe the Government should be able to get involved in University's football programs.

It's not like it's just meddling in just one University's program. This is a nationwide multi-billion dollar industry. The government is involved in the NFL, why not the NCAA?

That's the point, it's about cash flow. Colleges are turning more into corporate entities rather than public academic institutions. The money from the BCS isn't going to help the students so where exactly is it going? Unless someone here has audited a University before then none of us can say for sure, but tuition is increasing a substantial amount every year while these athletic departments are pulling in obscene amounts of cash flow. Why should the general public and current/future students be subjected to lackluster "championship" games and rising tuition in the current system?

The money SHOULD go to lower costs and make their institution affordable to the students that show the potential to succeed with them. It doesn't unfortunately so why should the entire country have to suffer from their greed? The government represents us, and state institutions are paid for on our dime, so i'm for whatever needs to happen to get what every single person besides the BCS entity and athletic departments want.

College is an institution. You want to go to college you pay the price. No one is forcing anyone to go to these over priced colleges. So the point of complaining about tuition isn't even a factor. For example NYU cost about 60K to attend not counting housing. You could easily go to a state school for about 15K and be fine. You want to save money on tuition get a scholarship academic or sports or go to a cheaper school. That's like buying an expensive car then complaining about your car payments and how it should be lowered. What a joke.

As for the government having anything to say about college football it's a joke.

Oh yeah for those who want Boise state to be in the national championship game tell them to get out the ****ing WAC join the pac-10 and let's seem them go undefeated untill they BSU can piss off.

This is clearly a dumb and uneducated post. You think Boise State or even TCU has a choice in this matter?

When the Southwest Conference was dissolved, Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech were offered the opportunity to join the Big 12 (a BCS conference), TCU, Houston, Baylor, SMU, and Rice where not offered to join a BCS conference. They were forced to go elsewhere to non-BCS conferences.

So teams never switch conferences? Miami and BC went from the big east to the ACC. I think Pitt may be changing conferences also. If they were good enough brought in enough money they'd be in a BCS conference. They don't and they aren't. In another 2 years BSU will fade into obscurity. It's also the reason why ND has their own conference.
