Offense sells tickets

I don't think their offense was #1 in scoring. The team was yes, but much of that was the defense. 50 turnovers will do that.

True but let's not act like they didn't have a very efficient offense. Scoring 31ppg isn't just because you have 50 turnovers. It is a combination though, you're right.

The Broncos did not have a good QB or passing game this year.

According to FO.com, the Patriots ranked 4th in passing efficiency, the Cardinals ranked 3rd and the Panthers ranked 9th.

In the prior season, the Patriots ranked 5th, Seattle ranked 10th, Green Bay ranked 2nd and Baltimore ranked 6th.

The year before that, Seattle ranked 8th, Denver ranked 1st, New England ranked 6th and SF ranked 4th.

In 2012 it was Baltimore ranking 15th, the Niners ranking 5th, New England ranking 1st and the Falcons ranking 10th.

In 2011, the Giants ranked 4th, the Patriots ranked 2nd, the Niners ranked 14th and the Ravens ranked 13th.

That's the last 20 teams to make it to the NFC Championship game and only the Broncos finished outside the top half in Passing Efficiency. And that was with Peyton injured and when he came back, he passed more efficiently than he did before he got injured (and more efficiently than Osweiler).

Out of those 20 teams, only 4 of them finished outside the top-10 in passing efficiency. And the team that continually ranks high in passing efficiency each year is a team that continually makes the playoffs in the Patriots.

The Broncos were more the exception to the rule. A great defense keeps a team in games, but it's not likely to win too many games outright.

Obviously, the Cowboys need to get much better on defense, but it would be a mistake to pass up on a good, young QB in the draft because this is such a passing oriented game.

It is just not sustainable. Not in this era.

It is a year to year proposition.

Denver's defense will be ripped apart by free agency in a worst case scenario, or at the very least, lose some important pieces and the chemistry will get disrupted. They will lose Malik Jackson for certain. Possibly Ware too. Derek Wolfe is not a sure thing to come back. Both their ILBs are free agents also.

From year to year, teams have to reinvent themselves, just like a college football powerhouse program. But they better have the coaching and philosophies set to do that.

QB is too important to pass up. But we're high enough in the 2nd round to pick a really good pass rusher.

That reminds me of Kony Ealy. Did you guys see him play last night? We gave up a 3rd rounder to move up in the 2nd to get Demarcus Lawrence, and he's made very little impact. Kony would have been available at our original 2nd round spot. This is why you DO NOT give up multiple picks for a single player.

Exactly. That's why defensive performance is far more volatile (good one year, bad the next) than offensive performance. That and historically defensive players are more than twice as likely to get injured than offensive players.

No, they didn't. They needed an offense to score points. You can't win if you don't score any points.

At best, the Broncos are the exception to the rule. And as Alexander pointed out, you really can't sustain great defense. You can sustain a good offense and use that to consistently make the playoffs and increase your odds of winning the Lombardi trophy.

Even the greatest defenses of all time did not have nearly the same sustained success. The Ditka Bears got figured out. Buddy Ryan's dominant 46 got figured out.

It is not as easy as saying "get a good defense". That includes so many moving parts and the majority of the time even if everything breaks right, you might get a year or two of the dominant level you want out of it. It is just the nature of the NFL right now and there is no formula that can be cloned outside of the petri dish it was created in.

Everything moves from year to year, both sides of the football. You can never assume you got it figured out and then start plugging pegs into holes. Even if you get the right shape, it still is not easily replicated.

The more flexibility and creatively you have with your staff plus the ability to get the talent to adapt to the changes, that is how you build a successful sustained program.

But expecting one side of the football to be continually dominant while remaining the same is an exercise in futility.

The bold. Period. This Broncos team is a 2001 Ravens type team, where the offense was carried by a strong defense. Credit to Elway et al, they knew how long to hold on to the remains of this offense and managed to hold on long enough to win the Super Bowl. It will be interesting to see how they manage to balance the Von Miller payday as well as the Brock Osweiler free agency. Osweiler is likely to be severely overpaid if he makes to open market.

Yep, and they basically had a field goal and a 2-point conversion yesterday. The Bronco defense and special teams produced 17 points.

And those types of things are rarely happen consistently over the course of seasons to be consistently reliable. It may get you that one magical year.

If the goal is to copy that, get me them two dynamic pass rushers and just think that will shut everyone down under 20 points a game, good luck with that.

The game is not designed for that. It is rigged in the offense's favor.

I agree, but........the complete ineptitude of the quarterbacks coming out of college is changing this. When Peyton, Brees, Romo, and Brady are gone.........

Don't tell Tom Brady and his 4 superbowl rings this.

Actually his first 3 rings, this statement is 100% accurate. Against the Rams, he had like 140yds passing and won. Warner had upwards to 400 and lost. It wasn't until later in his career he started to have a great offense. 2007. 16-0. One of the best offenses ever. And were shut down against the Giants.

Patriots did the same thing to the Rams in their 1st super bowl win. Rams were the high flying offense. Pats were a team who prided themselves on fundamentals. Offense that doesn't make mistakes often and a solid defense.

Bringing this home to the Cowboys, we will never win anything until this defense is figured out. And it hasn't been for a long time. Holes at every turn you make.

Right but people react to the present. Whatever just happened, that's the OMGonlywaytodoit!!!

That's what Jerry does.... I hope he goes out and spends his money on the best defensive talent he can find in FA, like Denver did.

Yup just as simple as that. Field a historically good defense and watch the SBs roll in. Why don't more teams go that route?

Just proves my point even more as the Panthers made it to the Super Bowl with that defense. Thanks for pointing that out.

I don't think your logic works the way you think it does.

This thread trumpets the Broncos over the Panthers as a defense over offense narrative that doesn't work when you... you know... actually consider who the Panthers were.

Next time take a deep breath before starting a thread.
