Officer trips, pushes students after soccer match; police investigating

AUTIN (KXAN) – Vandegrift High School won their first soccer state championship Saturday. If you look at the video attached with this story, you can see what appears to be a uniformed Georgetown police officer tripping and pushing students as they rush onto the field after the win.

A spokesman for the Georgetown Police Department said parents began emailing the department early Sunday morning, alerting them of the video.

As you see students rush the field after the win, a uniformed Georgetown police officer can be seen sticking his leg out to trip a high school student. He then tries to trip another student.

Then, YouTube video shot by a student at the game shows one of them limping off the field.

Should be fired, brought up on assault charges and whatever else can be thrown at that POS.

Abuse if power knowing a HS student wouldn't be able to defend themselves. Maybe he should go do more lines in the bathroom. Wouldn't surprise me if he was loaded. What a you know what.

They need increased psych screening for LE; too many simple bullies fall through the cracks.

Who needs surveillance cameras anymore? The majority of people today have smartphones so they can snap a photo or shoot video at a moments' notice. Back on subject, what a moronic way to lose one's job and possibly face prosecution.

He can't even use the "I was keeping them off the field" excuse.

What....there was all of a hundred students there?

He's probably an absolute angel out in the force. Plays by the rules and all.

It's lucky this was filmed................. The next video of him would've been much worse, IMO.

I would rather see someone like this guy, who intentionally tries to hurt someone, .. do a little time, than someone who smokes a joint and was hurting nobody. - JMO

Just let him do a week or a month in a minimum security situation.

Don't hurt others! .. play nice.

4 p.m. update: The Georgetown Police Department has placed Officer George Bermudez on paid administrative leave after video surfaced this weekend showing him tripping and pushing students who were rushing onto a field after a soccer game.

Bermudez’s actions were not appropriate measures for a crowd control situation, said agency spokesman Roland Waits. He said the matter has been referred to the internal affairs unit of the Georgetown Police Department.

Bermudez was chosen as an outstanding police officer for the Georgetown Police Department last year, Waits said. He said Bermudez has been with the department since 2005 as a school resource officer at Georgetown High School, where the soccer game was held Saturday.

Not sure why the outrage, I thought it was kinda funny. Obviously his job was to keep people off the field and after the flood of kids started running past him he said hell with it I'll at least slow them down a little bit. Probably not the smartest thing to do but its not like he was tazing them.

If we're down to this to get the internet jury up in arms maybe the world isn't in as bad of shape as I thought it was.

I'm not going to lie, I laughed as well initially (seeing the smooth trip) but the pushing showed his true intent. I thought he just thought it would be funny or something initially but then he goes after the same girl he tripped. That's when I was like, "come on dude that's punk ish"

Are the people who were there part of the internet jury? I wonder if his superior officer laughed like you or he is part of the internet jury too?

Dont know and dont care. Like every other viral outrage people will be shocked and appalled for a minute or two and then go back to watching the Kardashions and forget all about it.

She released another "home video"? Otherwise, not really;) Most NFL obsessed fans that take time to post on a extreme fan forum don't watch garbage like that. I get your general point about the short US public attention span towards "fake outrage." But that kid-cop was just a punk. He can always work a the DMV to get his power fix without being violent, etc.

You are pushing towards more progressive social organization grass root movements to conquer these problems in a more persistent and aggressive nature. I admire you sir, I wish I had the drive to do something like that. More federal/state funding and resources are needed to be sure things like this never happen again.

You are probably right and the cop might be power hungry with an inferiority complex but the problem with the "progressive social organization grass root movement" is that they base their opinions on 10 second video clips without knowing anything else about the situation.
