How does it work if the Cowboys or another team releases a player. Are they on waivers and can be claimed or can any team just sign them? Also, if you have to claim a released player and do, does that mean they need to be on your 53 and not your practice squad?

Only players that don’t go on waivers are players with 4 or more years in the NFL.

Players eligible for waiver wire. Are on it for 24 hours once released. Where there is an order which is based on the draft position as to teams that can claim them. After that 24 hours, they become a FA to sign with any team. If a team claims them, they must be on the 53 man roster for at least the 1st week.

Many teams will have hand shake deals with vet players to return after roster moves are made. Such as IR players for short term. Unless another team gives them a much better contract.
