Paper Tiger defense is what I liked to call Dan Quinns defense. It looks great on paper. The numbers looked great. Any good team shreds it like it's not even there. I don't care about turning the ball over against bad teams when you can't do it against anyone good. Zimmer is just as bad but can't even turn the ball over against bad teams.
Saw it yesterday watching the commanders game….the commanders defense looked stout vs the browns and cardinals and just like clockwork against a good unit they get absolutely SHREDDED vs the ravens…..Lamar over 300 passing and Henry over 120 and Zay Flowers targeted 7 times and caught all 7

The ravens offense moved the ball at will vs that defense

Now next week vs Carolina Quinn’s defense will look great again

We have a soft defense. No physicality whatsoever. The Lions were just running through us yesterday. It was like going through a turnstile. We don’t have good enough players on defense. Even with DLaw and Parsons our defense was getting destroyed. The Saints have lost four in a row and they destroyed us.

Quinn crapped the bed against GB in the playoffs. So I understand people’s frustrations.

That being said, people were lying to themselves to say Quinn wasn’t good.

The defense led the league in turnovers for 3 years in a row. That doesn’t happen by accident. And forcing turnovers is one of the most
Important things a defense can do.
Terrible run defense and got blown out by good teams (Buffalo, GB, San Fran).

His defenses prayed on bad teams and it was fun to watch, but were easily countered by teams with good offenses.

I agree but in Zim's defense, he's installing a new scheme with Q players. Players are simply still learning or not buying into his system as a unit. As a unit is critical cuz can't have 11 players out there with say 3-4 either not buying in or still learning. This is why they are giving up so many chunk plays. I have said this before, too many players out there thinking, not sure what their assignments are or their assignment is asking them to do too much. Dez said it best that Zim isn't playing players to their strength.

I am not saying he isn't the problem but at the same time, trying to install a new scheme w/o enough right players will be a challenge for any DC.

The cowboys led the league in forced turnovers over the last 3 seasons. A big part of the reason the team was 12-5.

This offseason Zimmer literally said they would force less turnovers. But that they would make it up by stopping the run and keeping scoring down.

Well….. we now force basically no turnovers. Bottom 10 in the league in turnovers forced. As a result (plus Dak turning the ball over like it’s his job) the cowboys are 26th in turnover differential.

I was very worried about Zimmer’s
Comments in the off season but figured I would wait and see how it goes.

Well the early returns are NOT good.

At least when Quinn’s defenses were getting ran on. They still make some big plays to get the ball back.

This is a BIG BIG problem. You can’t win a lot of NFL games when you are near the bottom of the league in turnover differential.
When Zimmer was our DC before I don't remember many turnover going our way. They might have been record lows for turnovers under him.

I hate to say but he's right ...........Zim is here cuz no other quality DC would take the job knowing MM is lame - duck. In other words, Zim was desperate to get back into the league.....this was his shot.
I don't think he was desperate, he just knew it would be 1 season only with no real pressure on him.
He figured he'd get his walking papers after the season like all the rest of the coaches.

This defense sucks vs all offenses all the time, the old defense only sucked vs good offenses some of the times. No comparison.

Yeah and the front office is horrible enough to set up the situation in the first place and then give Zim that chance.

If players don’t believe in the system, they’re not going to play for the way you want them to. If you don’t have the players in the first place, it’s even worse.

Under normal circumstances, turnovers come when the team gets out to early leads forcing teams to pass more. But in Dallas, they are not a normal team who can’t buy an early 14-0 lead.

Staple of Zimmers defenses. Most of the posters here knew that turnovers and sacks would pretty much evaporate under Zimmer.
