Couple of points:
It takes time for Oline to develop. Smith is 22, has played 2 years in NFL at 2 different positions and now has a new oline coach scheme (more zone blocking style being implemented) - and he's going up against one of the top 3 pass rushers in the league who is healthy and hungry (too hungry in my opinion - rest Ware more please - so he's solid throughout year and hopefully in playoffs!).
One other thing - as fans, especially those that read or listen to EVERYTHING - we have to realize that in a practice where very little is EASY to describe or analyze with true introspection, EVERY blogger is going to point out "sacks" and tweet or write about it - as a highlight of the practice. BUT, how often do you hear when in the dozens of one on one battles that "Smith manages to hold his own and stayed in the way of Ware and Romo was able to release the pass". BORING - nobody writes that. So, eventually doubt starts creeping in about Smith. Same would apply for "drops" and "picks" but nobody writes about - Player "X" was in the right position and made the routine tackle on the play - at least in these tweat summaries.
My BIGGEST issue with oline is the lack of NFL depth the Management/Coaching staff brings in - I don't care how many decent young prospects the team has - the vast majority of the oline either had questionable years (Free, Bernie) or was injured (all the centers/Livings) or are still projects/unproven with a few decent showings (Costa, Parnell, Kowalski, etc). TOO many unknowns and that might ok on a rebuilding 3-13 team, but not for a team that just paid Romo a ton of money, a QB that gets beat up way too often, and a team that has struggled terribly in the running game for a number of season.
You have to bring in a guy or two to solidifi the line, at least for camp, and AGAIN they didn't. They could have had Waters a year or two ago. Last year they cheaped out on the heavy guy that many felt was our best guard the year before - and didn't sign him. This year they didn't pursue Moore or anyone else.
If ANY team needs a few stop gaps until younger players prove themselves or step up - it is this team - but they don't do it and it has cost us last few years...
I do get "getting younger" but you need to get better and establish some depth...Too much hoping and not enough of a back-up plan when these guys start dropping like flies half of them are known to have pre-existing conditions and even Leary - who is now to be our saviour at Guard - already has degenerative knees - and who knows when that could cause issues. And we expect Smith to be a pro-bowler while lining up a who is who Guard beside him week to week?
