It’s kind of like watching an idiot drive 130 mph. You know what’s coming, but there’s not much you can do about it.
If the idiot driving 130MPH is in last years Moore/Garrett/Turner/Boise State hybrid car, I'd agree with you.
But the idiot is moving to the McCarthy West Coast for.........reasons.
Aaron Rodgers drove it. He said, ""It’s about timing and rhythm and balance and everything makes sense protection-wise. You know where your hots are, you know where your eyes are going every single time, you know how the concepts fit together.”
That's a promising drive when you have a QB who has trouble processing at the snap of the ball.
With this new model our QB knows where his hots are and where his eyes are going every single time.
Why is that important? Let's look at some numbers to see.....
In the Time to Throw metric, which measures how quickly a QB gets rid of the ball, Dak ranked bottom third, 20th, with 2.71 seconds before getting rid of the ball, (2.5 seconds is considered a good mark).
That's an issue. Your lineman have to hold their blocks longer while Dak processes the field. And how did that work out?
When Dak held the ball longer than 2.5 seconds, his completion percentage was 57.8%, TD/INT ratio was 20 touchdowns, 14 interceptions.
His passer rating dropped to 87.5.
But when throwing in 2.5 seconds (or less), Dak completed 77.4% of his passes, had 8 TDs and on 3 picks.
His passer rating was 99.3.
So which model do you want Dak driving? The one where the lineman don't have to hold their blocks as long and Dak gets rid of the ball quickly?
Or do you prefer the Moore/Garrett/Turner/Boise State Hybrid where the complaint is, "Dak can't read a defense; Dak held the ball too long?"
None of that promises Dak is going to be Aaron Rodgers. But it will make it easier on the lineman and QB.
And yeah, McCarthy expects to keep some things this team does well in his playbook.
So if Dak follows the plan we don't need monster lineman to hold 3-4 seconds. In the West Coast the guards get inside help with pass blocking so they only have to have enough power to not get trucked.
My needle hasn't moved, still at zero. And no time to panic when the start of the season is months away.
