It seems pretty clear that through all the ups and downs, the good, the bad and the mediocrity of the Garrett Era, one thing could be said of his teams, despite the results- they fought hard for 4 qtrs, every game.
But the noise surrounding this team, now in the 8th full season of Garrettsville, and with a weak 2-3 start, we must start to wonder if this team is tiring of the “process”. It might be different if there were some big signs of hope, like a star offensive player coming back, or some new spark to be seen in recent games. They just aren’t there.
I’ve followed the Cowboys every year since 1964. The place we are at now reminds me of the ‘87 and ‘88 teams under Landry, who was one of the top 5 greatest coaches in NFL history, but was trying to rebuild a team without much to work with. It reminds me even more of 2010, when Romo was hurt and the team had basically seen there was no way forward with Wade Phillips. They became disheartened and cashed in their chips. They quit on Phillips. It was essentially the end of an era started by Parcells in ‘03, but ending in 2010.
The Garrett era officially started in 2011, and after 7 seasons and some change, this team has had two playoff appearances. And the future doesn’t exactly look like a road to the super bowl. Sometimes, the magic just doesn’t happen.
It must be said that this team hasn’t quit on the Clapper just yet. But I think he’s on life support. If this team gets whipped at home against the Jags, and the boo birds descend on Jerry’s sacred “stayjum”, the “Quit Watch” will be on full alert.
Mr. Hall of Fame “contributor” MAY soon face a cold realty- a team that is no longer listening to the red headed robot. If that happens, whether Jerry accepts it or not, the Garrett experiment is over. It will agonize him and frustrate him, but Jerry fears losing paying customers more than he fears losing. If boos and empty seats start showing up, the clock is ticking.
Tick, tick, tick......
