This goes back to the 2016 draft. I dont want to go in depth here but Jerry using the second round as his "risk taking round" has really hurt this team.

Lets look at who was available when the Cowboys took a risk on Jaylon Smith.

Chris Jones DT
A'Shawn Robinson DT
Deion Jones LB
Michael Thomas WR

That is just 2016. Instead of building the trenches they took a risk on a red shirt LB who may never be the same again. One example

2019

Available after Trysten Hill
Dk Metcalf WR
Juan Thornhill S

2021
Kelvin Joseph-More red flags than an amusement park was the pick.

Walker Little OT
Creed Humphrey C
JOK LB
Nick Bolton LB

2023
Luke Schoonmaker a TE who we didnt need and who will be almost 30 by the time he needs a new contract was the pick

O'Cyrus Torrence OL
Devon Achane RB

This is 3 drafts where the Jones' used a second round pick on backup players. Where a pick for a legitmate starter was needed.

Yes they have hit on some second rounders but if you look at the way Detroit drafts. They stick to their board. They dont take chances until later rounds. When you are supposed to. Rounds 1 and 2 are for legitmate plug and play players. Not projects.

This is one of many reasons that this team keeps getting lapped by other teams. Jerry needs to turn over all football operations so this doesnt happen again. Because it will. He cant help himself.

we made bad picks, but hey we weren't the only ones, let's see what they do this summer
Its not about making bad picks. Its about making picks that arent out of need or want. They reached for Joseph just because they wanted a CB.

In fairness, you could do this to a ton of teams. Not saying we didn't make mistakes but a lot of teams do dumb things like this. Philly made a SB last year and they stupidly took Reagor over Jefferson.
Of course you could. But those teams take players they believe are good or can help, this team takes risks on players when they dont need to. Its Jerry's fun round.

I don't get that line of thinking though, if you need a player get him, they say that every draft "we don't want to draft for need!" We NEED OL and DL, so are we not going to get them because it's a need???

Now to me reaching would be to get a CB that wasn't valued in the round that you're currently in, or you did your research on said player and he has an injury history, poor teammate, or has some legal issues

You just described Kelvin Joseph.

I'll just say, it's very easy to do this after the draft.
Of course it is. We arent professionals though. For a team to look at Joseph and look at Humphrey or the abundance of talent there without the issues and take Joseph tells you everything you need to know.

No offense, but DO? Likely we will do what we been doing, which is sign guys on the cheap that are on the back nine of their careers, then sell it to the media and fans as if we fixed the team and we are SB quality. We will be paper champs again. I say that because we have a messed-up cap and contracts to get done. We will likely draft guys and expect them to start day 1 to fill massive holes. Gilmore will be gone. He might retire. He looked old.

I can't figure out WHY our 1st round pick lost weight throughout the season? I mean, if it's because Dan Quinn has a boner for player smaller players, he can go.

Our owner won't fire the incompetent GM and hire a full-time one. That's the main reason. The same owner and GM in fact is 100% of the problem. They cause nearly every issue that holds the Cowboys back and ultimately hire the other problems.

True but this could be made for just about any Team.

Just for example Philly

2014
26th Pick took DE Marcus Smith II. The guy played only a handful of games and has 36 total Tackles in his career. Cut 2017. Never seen again
-> 28th Pick was WR Kelvin Benjamin, 30th Pick was S Jimmie Ward, 31st was CB Bradley Roby

2015
20th Pick took WR Nelson Agholor who was a bust and a drop machine in his Eagles career
-> 22nd Pick was LB Bud Dupree, 24th OT DJ Humphries, 25th LB Shaq Thompson, 26th CB Byron Jones

2017
43rd Pick took CB Sidney Jones who was a bust and cut after three seasons
-> 48th Pick was RB Joe Mixon, 62nd WR Juju Smith-Schuster, 63rd OG Dion Dawkins, 67th Alvin Kamara, 69th Cooper Kupp

2019
22nd Pick took OT Andre Dillard. Started only 19 games in his career, 5th yr option not picked up.
-> 24th Pick was RB Josh Jacobs, 26th was DE Montez Sweat, 36th was WR Deebo Samuels

In the 2nd they took a WR named JJ Arcega-Whiteside. Complete Bust, has 16 total receptions in his career. Guy plays in Canada now.
-> After that Pick S Taylor Rapp, S Juan Thornill, WR DK Metcalf, WR Diontae Johnson

2020
21st Pick took WR Jalen Reagor. Complete Bust
-> 22nd Pick was WR Justin Jefferson, 24th Pick was C Cesar Ruiz, 25th Pick WR Brandon Aiyuk, 26th QB Pick Jordan Love, 28th Pick LB Patrick Queen

2023
30th Pick LB Nolan Smith . So far didnt get playing time and looked lost when he played. As worse as the Mazi Pick right now.
-> After that went OG Steve Avila (started all games for the Rams as a Rookie), TE Sam LaPorta, TE Luke Musgrave, C Joe Tippmann (started all games for the Jets), OG Matthew Bergeron (started all games for the Falcons).

Hindsight is always easy. They hit big in the 2021 and 2022 Drafts.

If they took the "right" guys from 2014 onwards they could have got:

Jimmie Ward, Bud Dupree, Alvin Kamara, Montez Sweat, DK Metcalf, Justin Jefferson, Steve Avila

or

Kelvin Benjamin, Joe Mixon, Deebo Samuels, Juan Thornhill, Patrick Queen, Matthew Bergeron

That isnt the point I am trying to make.

The point isnt that they missed on picks. Its that they PURPOSELY missed on picks to satisfy Jerry being a football guy.

Detroit and SF are dominant at the line of scrimmage. Dallas has 3 All-Pros on the OL and somehow cant run the ball if their lives depended on it.

You can do this with every team.
Again. This isnt about doing it for every team. I understand whiffing on a pick.

The point I am making is that they take UNNECESSARY risks in the second round instead of just drafting good football players. You want to take a risk go for it.

Go for it in the 5th. Not the second.
