One thing we forget about Wade Phillips' defense.

BannednAustin/BennAustin/AGS realizes he was wrong, he just doesn't want to admit he was wrong so he will hide behind the word "variation".:lmao2: :lmao2:

Just exactly what was I wrong about? I was merely quoting Jason Garrett... and I chose a different word, but it pretty much implies the same thing.

We're running an offense that has variations, elements and schemes that are similiar to the west coast offense.

How am I wrong?

Dallas did finish 4th in points scored last year, with a QB change mid season. It's always best to try and keep your defense off the field, but a big part of that is the defense itself. If the defense doesn't hold up the opposing offense, they are going to be on the field a lot, despite what the offense can do.

I think our offense will be better this year with a beefed up line. And when it comes down to it, I see more positives here than negatives regarding my concern. But I can't help but worry a little.

You get up by two touchdowns with quick scores and what the defense has to accomplish changes completely. This is to a greater extnet if its in the second half.

The offense is not going to run the ball nearly as much and that is how you wear out a defense. The defense on the other hand can cheat towards the pass and give them a distinct advantage. Witht he way that Phillips likes to play defense this advantage becomes huge. You didnt want to go into the second half down by two scores against San Diego last year.

I think we'll have a better kicker this year than last year, which will give our defense better field position.

For whatever it is worth:

In 16 of his 25 years as a defensive coordinator or head coach, the offenses of Wade Phillips' teams were in the top 10 for # of rushing attempts and # of rushing yards.

Phillips has coached on teams with fine RBs, including George Rogers, Earl Campbell, Keith Byars, Bobby Humphrey, Thurman Thomas, the Duckett & Warrick Dunn combo in Atlanta, and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Antowain Smith and Gaston Green each had 1,000 yard seasons when Phillips was coaching on their team.

Clearly, then, many of Phillips' defenses have had the support of a fine running game.

But that doesn't mean that his defenses were successful only because they were supported by solid running games. It goes two ways. If Phillips' defenses gave up too many points, his offenses would have had to abandon the run.
