Opinion: Next week's game is officially meaningless

What am i missing? If SEA wins tonight, which I fully expect, we are the Number 2 seed. Right, Seattle would be the leader in the west and we have the tie breaker, right? Det, DAL, Seattle and ATL. Then next week, if GB beats DET, which I expect and we win, we are the number 1 seed, as long as Sea wins the west. I think we have to play for the win next week. We could very well be the #1 seed at the end of the season.

What you are missing is there would be a 3 way tie with GB, Seattle, and Dallas and GB wins that tie breaker, so they would be the #2 seed.

Everyone's talking about playing for a bye in the playoffs.... why not just take our "bye" next week by resting everyone? It would essentially be the same thing as a first round bye in the playoffs, except of course that there's still an actual game to play and backups could get injured. And we'd still need to win 3 games in a row to get to the SB.

Instead of risking injury at the hands of a hated rival who would love nothing more than to ruin our momentum, why not just rest next week? Why keep all the starters in on the off chance that the other games go our way and we somehow get a first round bye? We can make our own bye!!

OK I'm finished, lol.

if we are 12 -4, Sea is 12 - 4 and GB is 12 -4, How are we not the Number 1 seed? we have the head to head against SEA and a better common opp record against GB, so we would have the tie breaker. I don't get how we have no shot at #1

Our conference record is worse than both of them. That is the primary tiebreaker. They would both get the Bye over us.

The 3 way tiebreaker ignores head to head since we didn't beat both teams and goes to conference record, which we come out on the bottom of no matter what happens. The only tiebreak we have is the head to head over Seattle which only matters if we end up tied with them alone.

Assuming GB and DET don't tie, NOTHING WE DO AFFECTS WHETHER WE GET THE BYE OR NOT.

That is not true. If Seattle wins tonight, and then Arizona and Seattle both lose next week, we would be the #2 seed regardless of who wins the GB/Det game.

3 way tie goes to conference record and we lose out in almost all scenarios.

Yeah, actually Buffalo beating GB killed our chances. If they wouldn't have lost that game, they would have come out 13-3 more than likely and taken the 1st seed, and then us and Seattle would have ended up 12-4 and it would go to head to head and we would get the #2 seed. That GB loss to Seattle really impacted us in a bad way.

Right, but this would happen regardless of what we do vs. the skins.

Ah good point. Then just sit the starters and be safe. No reason to play the starters against the Commanders that hate our guts. Heck, they will try to injure us. Just not worth it.

I read this in the official forum I think there's a lot of confusion going on right now about our chances at the bye

"There is a chance to get the bye but I'm pretty sure the 1 seed is out of reach. Don't trust that simulator though. It's not correct.

There will be a 3 team tie at 12-4. Now this has been correctly mentioned already but only one team advances from the result of a tie-breaking procedure. The remaining two teams go into a two team tie break. Also realize that there can only 3-way tie amongst the division winners.

So at this point it's simple:
In order to get the bye want be tied with Detroit and Seattle in the 3-way tie for the 1 seed. Detroit would win that tie breaker and get the one seed.

Dallas and Seattle would be in a 2-way tie for the 2 seed and Dallas wins by virtue of the of the head to head matchup.

Detroit, Dallas, and Seattle would all have to win out."

If we aren't locked into 3 seed and 3 seed only it's not meaningless

Some of you guys need to brush up on the tie breakers. Because even though we aren't locked in to the three seed, winning or losing does not effect our seeding. For example, 11-4 Detroit plays 11-4 GB, one of those teams will be 12-4 and get a first round bye over us. Also, if Arizona wins tonight, they get a first round by, because they are 13-3 or 12-4 and we are still the loser in a three way 12-4 tie and are stuck at the three seed. If Seattle wins tonight, and wins tomorrow, we lose the three way tie breaker here as well. Literally the only way we get a bye, is if Seattle wins tonight and both teams lose next week. This will create two IDENTICAL situations, one where we are the #2 seed after being tied with GB/DET at 12-4 or one where we are the #2 seed at 11-5, we own a head to head tie breaker over Seattle.

No matter what, if Arizona loses out and Seattle loses week 17, we get a bye. So it is by definition, meaningless (I guess if you factor tie scores it's not, but let's be honest, that isn't happening).

If winning next week doesn't help or hurt the cause then treat it like the preseason.
