Opinions on whether we re-sign either Canty, Burnett,

I don't understand the problem with Canty. He outperformed Spears coming into last year. Who was the weakest starting player on the DL in the running game? Spears, Canty or Ratliff?

Canty didn't outperform Spears in the run game pretty much at any point. He just caught the pass rush acorn every now and then and people overrated him because of it.

He seemed to take a step back last year that is for sure.

Coaching issues aside, I think we should churn the roster a little bit and keep a few of the hard workers and big producers.

Canty is a keeper for the right price. I think Thomas, as much as I hate to say it, is a liability. But I'll root for whoever wears the star.

I concur. They don't make plays. You can go stretches where you forget they're even on the team. Make a play you bums!!

No. Getting a vet like Polk to play ST rather than having a young player to play ST and potentially develop into someone who can contribute at LB and push his way into some defensive snaps is what we need. I like Polk. I like what he gave us on ST but for every vet like Polk, that is one fewer spot to develop someone ... too much of that and you always have to go outside to fill spots rather than letting a 2nd or 3rd year player the chance to step up

Yeah, that is nuts. If he hasn't shown anything in 3 years, he isn't showing it now. This isn't a place where players are tested out. This is the DC and we've had enough trial and error, especially with people like Garrett.

I cannot think of one play that Burnett made last year. I have felt that way about him for several years now. His stat lines are unimpressive as well.

He is the definition of a JAG and I say only keep him if he comes cheap.

The issue(s) with Burnett are (1) with his various injuries, I doubt the Cowboys pay up to keep him. I'd imagine that at the very least he would want to test FA. (2) If the coaching staff is serious about R Williams playing SS and some ILB in a nickel defense, it makes Burnett's worth come down even more.

I don't know how to evaluate 3-4 DEs well. You can't go by their sack totals. Unless you look at film you can't tell what their assignments are. I do believe we could get a little more out of our DEs but again you don't know their assignments. Canty looked better in the years previous to 08 than Spears did, IMO. I don't look at one year to judge someone not that my opinion means much.

Burnett's injuries are a problem but he seemed to stay on the field last year for the most part. Didn't he? And his work in the nickle and dime packages was pretty good I thought. It's hard to follow LBs all the time on TV though. I don't see RWs doing Burnett's job although I'd love for him to be able to do it on a fulltime basis if he can do it well.

You can Franchise or Transition tag any UFA on your roster. That is the purpose of it.

RFAs you make a tendered offer to or can match any tendered offer.

First priority is Burnett, the only caveat on him is whether he can play a full 16 game season. Canty second, but it depends on what the market price will be for him. He is a good player but not worth breaking the bank over.
