FRISCO - Former Oregon Duck running back Royce Freeman is earning major praise from the Dallas Cowboys for his rushing attack and ability to quickly adjust to the Cowboys. Just a few weeks after signing a one-year contract in Dallas, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is suggesting the real possibility of an immediate impact for the veteran.

“Very impressed with him,” McCarthy said on Wednesday at Cowboys OTAs. “When you have the opportunity to play in a number of different systems, I’m very impressed with how quickly he picked up the language. Football comes pretty easy to him. It’s natural. You can see that protection. He has been an excellent addition.”

Is he gonna play is the question...
I don’t believe so. He may be a veteran on the practice squad who gets a few call ups.

I like Royce and follow Oregon pretty closely. But I feel he is too much like Zeke to justify a spot on the 53.

But he is a great blocker and great special teamer. So he could sneak on with that 52nd or 53rd spot.

I saw this in real time, and I have to tell ya, as glowing as it may be to read in its own silo, given the context... had McC said much different than this, it would have stuck out from all the other "how's [player X] doing so far" assessments (all positive) the media as a matter of routine put to him in off-season pressers, in their desperate search for something anything worthy of writing about to fill their quotas.

I like Freeman, don't get me wrong. I was actually among his protagonists as he got signed. That's not why I'm raining on this parade. It's just, this is off-season fluff that should not be taken to be more than what it is.

Seems like a better option than Duese who is just a gadget player. If he can play. Hard to just a RB when no one’s trying to tackle him

Zeke, Dowdle, Freeman, Leupke. I doubt they keep anymore. They will keep at least 2 on the PS if not 3. Deuce being one of them if the 3rd.

I know there are fans of Peat, as I want to see what he can do also. But until I see him in PS games, I will keep him 5th on the depth chart.
But will have him above Davis, who I also like.

Peat would be the favorite to replace Freeman.

I don’t think that running back stable is going to scare too many defenses.

Depends on the o-line. If they can spring some actual holes..we'll be alright.

I'm actually looking for a lineman to be up the field a few yards looking for a hulk-smash ala O. Pace. Instead of getting pushed into the handoff.
Yes, if the offensive line can come together it will go a long way in determining run game success. Would still like to have a better back. It’s still early, so that may happen.

I still just can't believe Zeke Elliot is our starting RB in 2024. Best short down distance player in the league, but probably the worst starting RB.

I kind of feel like he and Zeke are going to be the 1-2 because we are going to try to power up the middle, and Dowdle is going to be the change of pace. I think we're going to want to hammer defenses between the tackles and he and Elliott are built for that. It isn't that Dowdle is small or can't run between the tackles, but Elliott and Freeman are pure power.

They had the same type praise about Mazi and we all know how that's turned out. Until a young player starts going heads up against real tacklers or defenders, I'm taking in all the praise with a grain of salt..............

Im hoping that "starting" is just a technicality...that we be creative and adept enough yo move personnel around, subbing, etc....and not "bellcow".
