Transformers and some guys at ILM got royally screwed on the visual effects award.

Pirates I could almost understand, even though the VFX weren't as good as TFs. But Golden Compass? It shouldn't have even been nominated really. Harry Potter was the 3rd best movie in VFX last year.

What was visually appealing about Transformers? I loved the Transformers cartoon just like any kid growing up in the 80's and I hated the film primarily because of the visual effects. You couldn't even tell what was going on. The visual effects made them less like characters and more like empty robots with the exception of Optimus Prime. That fight scene at the end just bored me to tears because it was just a big mess.

I don't think I've seen any of the movies nominated for anything this year.

I was watching Amadeus earlier tonight though (Best Pic 1985).

I guess I'll have to wait for this year's crop to make it to Netflix.

Love that movie.

I have to agree. It was way too cluttered and it made it difficult at times to tell who was who.

Sometimes the best visual effects are effects you don't even notice, just take it for being real.

Just because people use a HUGE amount of FX does not mean it is always the best. When it becomes too distracting it takes away from it IMO.

I just felt they were targeting an international crowd in which you don't really have to understand what is going on but you can still enjoy it from a child-like perspective of big machines blowing up and crashing into each other. I really thought they were lazy and didn't try to honor the cartoon. Aside from Optimus Prime, I couldn't tell who any of the others were during fights scenes as you already mentioned. I understand it's a summer blockbuster but that's no excuse any longer. Maybe in the mid 90's, you could just make a brain dead film about a popular superhero or franchise and it would work but that's no longer the case now because even comic/cartoon franchises are being done well these days. The film just looked like a video game.

Great actor.

He almost looked exactly the way he did in Gangs of New York.
Both performances OUTSTANDING.

greatness of the Last King of Scotland

I really like that much better than several of the best picture nominees last year

This year, I liked many of the films producing best actor/supporting nominations a great deal as well:

Gone Baby Gone, Eastern Promises, Jesse James, La Vie En Rose, and I'm Not There - in particular (haven't seen Savages or Into the Wild yet) - Kinda thought all of those had something on Michael Clayton - others like Lars and the Real Girl, King of Kong, Once, Helvetica, This is England, The Wind the Shakes the Barley, and Red Road all stood out as well.

Good year for movies.

Once was very good -- I really didn't want to see that but was so glad I did. Great to see those kids get best song from what is truly a great great song.

I have not seen "Once" yet and that was the first time I heard that song. Very good song. Even though it was a good song, I thought that it was a very weak year for the best song category. The three from "Enchanted" were not good at all in my opinion.
