You've been counting those three points in your stats. Here's what you posted to start this thread --

------------------------------
3 quarters SEATTLE 4th quarter
169 Yards 120
12 First downs 8
3 Points 10
------------------------------

The defense really allowed only seven points in the fourth quarter, since it had no part in the final three.

ok I see...you are right...

oh well, I'll blame DMN then...I cut and pasted that from their article :)

we shouldnt be blowing these leads...you mention that we didnt blow the SD and SF games, but both teams did DRIVE into our side of the field and had ints to end the come back hopes

The 49ers didn't make it into our territory on any of their final three drives. And like I said earlier, there's nothing too unusual about what we've done. Just look at how often teams overcome a small deficit late in the fourth quarter. Our own offense has done it twice, we won another game in overtime and we lost yet another game when we drove to the 3-yard line in the final two minutes.

pretty sure Newman got that pick in th SF on our side of the field

I'm not going to analyze what every other team has done for the past 5-6 yrs, but I'd say we're almost assuredly near the top (if not the #1) team in blowing 4th qtr leads...good teams get leads and hold them, bad teams dont

As far as the first field goal sealing the game, it's not true. You can't change a play like that, make it 10-3, and expect the entire game to follow exactly as it did. If it's 10-3, we kickoff, they don't get it from the spot of the miss. They could return the kickoff, they're going to run different plays, we're going to run different defenses. There probably is no interception. EVERYTHING from that point on would be different. We could have gone on to win 20-3, or lost 17-10. There are infinite possible outcomes. Sure it probably gives the team a better chance to win, but then again, it might not have.

Having said that...

This defense has to step it up at the end of the game when the other team is desparate. The Skins, Giants, and Seahawks games are inexusable. If it happens once it's one thing, but over and over is not OK. Yes, teams pass more when they need to score late in the game. Yes, the other team has 4 downs instead of 3. That doesn't mean the defense has to stop covering people. WRs have been wide open quite a bit in these 4th qtr. debacles. They need to do something about their pressure, and they need to tighten up their coverage. There is no reason this should happen this many times. If you can't stop a team when it matters, then what you do for the first 55 minutes doesn't matter.

Newman didn't get the pick, he tipped the ball away and Nguyen caught it. The 49ers were at their own 37 and threw a short slant.

2-10-SF 37(1:00) 13-T.Rattay pass intended for 18-O.Amey INTERCEPTED by 59-D.Nguyen at SF 43. 59-D.Nguyen to SF 36 for 7 yards (48-T.Smith).

Good teams blow leads, too. And bad teams usually aren't leading in the first place.

If someone would have a good explanation of why we are collapsing and how we can fix it, I would feel much better.
How about our offense score some points. Just a thought.

It's a great thought, but the fact remains.....we had a lead.

We had a lead around the two minute warning and gave it away.

No matter how many points that have been scored, we still need to close the deal.

Fergeson said as much today.

I don't care if we have a 2-0 lead......If we're ahead with two minutes left, we still have to have our defense close it out.

Sure the offense needs to help.....I wish they had a 23-3 lead at the end of the game, but we didn't. We had a lead late in the fourth and lost. Hail the defense....they were fantastic. But they must hold the other team.....

One thing that could help would be to play the game not paying attention to the scoreboard. Play every play like its the last or to score. The best defense is a great offense sometimes. Put it out of reach. The red light of ok we have the lead in the 4th we need to play not to lose has failed bigtime & needs to be addressed & changed.

Ok.. I feel better ..rant over!

And how about depending on our kicker keeping kickoffs inbounds.

How about depending on our kicker to make a 29 yard FG, instead of missing it while the opposing kicker nails 50+ yard FG's like they are extra points.

How about counting on our offense to do better than 140 yards passing and 2 INT's.

I know, instead lets blame it all on the defense..........

If we were loosing on late scores by 35-31, or 31-28, or 27-24, I'd be concerned about the D.

In our 3 losses we've averaged a whopping 12 points per game. In the Seattle game our offense handed them the ball in FG range with 5 seconds left. We scored 3 points on 2 trips inside their 10 yard line. In the Raider game, we had the ball at their 3 and couldn't score.

Some will argue offensive play-calling, others, offensive player execution, or lack thereof. It's likely a little of both.

But the D? Come on. Not their fault.
