Our biggest need: Backup QB

Coming out of the draft, which we did well in, I am very glad we went overboard with defensive picks. We needed a booster there. But I do expect our offense to regress a bit, a year of tape on Elliott and Prescott, a weaker line up front, no net positive additions... but one huge downgrade no matter how you slice it.

We effectively went from Tony Romo to Kellen Moore as our backup.

Obviously more too it, but at its core, that is what happened.

Disregard the amount of 2nd year QBs who bust.. we need a backup QB pronto. Fortunately for us, there are some really strong candidates that I would be comfortable with leading us into battle on Sundays.

My vote is signing Jay Cutler. We would have the best backup QB in the league, a guy who at 33 could feasibly play 7 more years in this environment, he may take it as the opportunity to show the league he can be a franchise again - come on, falling that far from grace has got to sting and get the ego involved. We could get a steal.

Otherwise your top bets are Kaepernick, RG3 (who is probably my second choice), Fitzpatrick/Ponder.

Choice is clear in my mind, sign Cutler as soon as possible.

Romo is still the backup QB if we need one long term. Kellen is just there to finish a game or two.
No way he would unretire to take up Prescotts mantle, only exception is if we are 6-0 or 7-0, even then if he falls he burns his reputation. He is not coming out of the booth to take over for an injured Prescotts 3-4 Cowboys.

Cutler likely won't take to a backup role. No thank you.
He may with a high-profile team like Dallas. If he gets in the game and does well, next off-season he isn't looking like a chump, he could walk out with a 3 year, 65m deal. It is an investment in himself.

In that scenario I'd rather the team just tank.
Which side of the coin?

Because I bet if we don't have a solid backup, come October if we are 5-1, 6-0 and Prescott goes down, my money is on a nice fellow named Tony to ride in on the proverbial white horse and take the mantle and lead this team.

Imagine if it worked, though? Imagine if Romo unretires and leads us to a win in the Super Bowl? It would dwarf anything in Cowboys history, probably anything in NFL history. I am all for that scenario, forget tanking for the future when history is in the cards.

plenty of veteran QB's will be cut at the end of training camp if Dallas wants a veteran.....

Cutler has already worn out his welcome with every roster that he's been involved with. He's not a good locker room guy,
He also has basically been notoriously lazy and still has managed to be a good NFL QB no matter what you say about him.

How good do you have to be to not even try and still be a top 12-13 starting NFL QB?
Imagine if this failure has the fire in him burning like it hasn't since his days lacing up in high school?

Romo is on "plan B" right now. You don't think he would go back to "plan A" should the opportunity arise? He most certainly would.

That certainly is the prevailing view. My preference would be Kaepernick but there is no way JJones will sign a NFL protester on his roster.
I still think the unmentioned one K.Moore has some real possibilities. He's not a popular choice but he has the intangibles coaches fall in love with.
We'll see

No one of this caliber.

He is on plan A-, yeah he would prefer to be starting somewhere, but trust me if you don't think he picked up the phone and got Aikman's advice on this, you're crazy. He could be an announcer for the next 40 years if he is solid... He steps back on that field and flops, that opportunity is gone.

One is a shot at glory, one is a shot at longevity, fortune, income, fame, purpose.

The choice is easier than it seams, except if you throw in the possibility of actually winning it and increasing his value on both sides of the coin.

If he comes back and tanks? He spends his next 40 years in regret.

Put yourself in his shoes.

If we have a bad record and Dak gets hurt, just tank. Calling on Romo under that scenario would only worsen our draft position.

My question is how many games does Dak have to be out for in order for Romo to leave his gig? I don't think we call on him if Dak is only out for 2-3 games. So our next question should be can Kellen Moore get us through 2-3 games? I say no. I think we need to find someone else during the offseason.

I love how everyone thinks any player would come to Dallas, First of all with your scenario, what does Dallas offer any player. If you started this week, the trend is, if you want a ring, leave Dallas. I really dont see many players wanting to come to Dallas , unless the big check clears or they have nothing else.

Why does everyone think Tony will clear a desk job to come save Dallas?

You are so negative. Now let's look at the other side of the coin. The Cowboys are destined for the playoffs but Dak goes down and is out for the season. Enter Tony Romo... saves the season, wins the Super Bowl and secures his legacy as a Hall of Fame QB. Is CBS going to give him his job back? Not only is the answer hell yes, CBS has the exclusive on his story. The rest of his life he will be a God to Cowboys fans young and old.

Yep, and I said that was the exception.

If a Lombardi is in sights, the right move is to gamble. If our season is in shambles, the right move is to say no thanks.

It's the only possibility to consider if you are Tony Romo and wish your football career had end hoisting up the Lombardi. If another opportunity arises to do that with the Cowboys, no matter how slim, you better believe he's taking that gamble... with his wife's blessing.
