I find it surprising that it took 29 posts for someone to finally get it. Many forget Showers is a competent backup!
Correction... he use to be a serviceable backup but now he is listed as a S, #28. His QB days are behind him.

Coming out of the draft, which we did well in, I am very glad we went overboard with defensive picks. We needed a booster there. But I do expect our offense to regress a bit, a year of tape on Elliott and Prescott, a weaker line up front, no net positive additions... but one huge downgrade no matter how you slice it.

We effectively went from Tony Romo to Kellen Moore as our backup.

Obviously more too it, but at its core, that is what happened.

Disregard the amount of 2nd year QBs who bust.. we need a backup QB pronto. Fortunately for us, there are some really strong candidates that I would be comfortable with leading us into battle on Sundays.

My vote is signing Jay Cutler. We would have the best backup QB in the league, a guy who at 33 could feasibly play 7 more years in this environment, he may take it as the opportunity to show the league he can be a franchise again - come on, falling that far from grace has got to sting and get the ego involved. We could get a steal.

Otherwise your top bets are Kaepernick, RG3 (who is probably my second choice), Fitzpatrick/Ponder.

Choice is clear in my mind, sign Cutler as soon as possible.
If anything happens to Dak, Moore starts one game and Romo comes back. I'm sure of that.

I can't believe that so many of you don't realize that Romo will come back if needed.

Might want to review that Day 3 draft presser. Red was asked explicitly if Showers returning to QB is an option. His reply without question left that door open.

I'd like to think that. I really would. But I'm not one to be quite so sure of myself when left to conjecture.

Romo's not coming back folks. What's he gunna do leave CBS' no. 1 spot to to come play a handful of games? That would burn every bridge he has in the industry, and ruin his post playing plans for good. No way he risks that for a few games. It's nice in theory and would be a great story but I believe him when he says he's done with football.

Too many youngsters on this team to bring in an 'I don't care' attitude like Cutler's. If he got one person to share his mentality it could poison the locker room. Just like TO had a simpleton, like Crayton, agreeing with every word said before both had to go.
Give me Fitzpatrick. He shouldn't be asking for much after fleecing the Jets last year. He's been a backup, so he knows what is expected. And can have tea and crumpets with Red while they talk about the blue bloods in the Ivy League.

Fitzpatrick has a history of success as a backup. That has been his cycle: he signs as a backup, starter gets hurt, he plays well, some team pays him to start, he sucks, and then everyone hates him.

He tries to do too much on teams that lack talent. He wouldn't have that problem here. Couldn't pay him much but he is better than Kellen Moore.

Of course this is true. Romo has been handed a cherry job he will meet that challenge. You can't return home.

If DAK gets injured by mid season and is out for the rest of the season and our record is pretty decent or at least even at like 4-4. I can see Romo coming out of retirement to save the day and taking us to the SB :D.

His answer was extremely ambiguous, however he never said Showers returning was an option. What he did say is they are looking to college FA to possibly solve the 3rd QB position. In short, Showers is done as a QB.

Check out the Eagles game from last year.

But Romo had been working out with the team. He was still on the Cowboys roster.
You're talking about him walking from the broadcasting booth, not working out with the team as a second-string quarterback.
And even if he's working out on his own, many will tell you there's a difference between working out on your own and working out with the team.

So are you saying you think his body will be in shape to come from the broadcast booth into a game of meaning and respond like he never left the game?

I wouldn't be opposed to it if it's not too expensive. I'm kind of surprised some other team hasn't picked him up to compete for a starting job. Is he a locker room problem/bad teammate? I don't want him if that's the case.

You're welcome to hold on to that opinion, but I think you're ignoring that the easier answer to the exact question posed was to specifically address what the reporter asked... i.e., instead of Red saying, "Yes, Showers is a safety now," he decided to hedge.

Hedging should be taken as just that.. hedging.

I'm welcome to my opinion? How very kind of you. Whether you welcome it or not, I will have it, express it, change it when appropriate and always insist it be heard. You just want to believe Showers can be a QB again for the Cowboys so bad that you can misconstrue anything coach says to mean anything. How wonderful it must be to live in your world were words can mean anything you will them to mean.

Meanwhile, back in reality we have Kellen Moore as our backup QB and most likely will have another FA QB come on board for OTAs and training camp. The emergency QB is Beasley, meaning if we need a third QB in a game, he's the man. Showers is not in the mix to ever play QB again.

I have no issue with Cutler coming in as a backup playing for backup money. Cutler does not sound as if that is what he wants. For the most part I don't expect a lot out of the backup QB, if you can get a guy who can step in for a few games and hold down the fort great but expecting any back up in this league to go out and lead their team to greatness seldom happens.
