I agree that Ellis is not a sack master but he does a very good job on the field as far as shutting down the run and has a lot of passes batted down in his career. I don't think Ellis coming back solves all problems but I think we are better with him in the lineup than without him.

Excellent point about the batted passes. He always seems to get more than his share.

My reply was to the comment that our problems were solved by the return of our superstar. Maybe if it was Woodson, but Ellis isn't going to make that big of an impact. Spencer surprised me with how well he played the second half.

I think Ellis will make an impact how big of one will depend on how he is able to come back from the injury. I think having Ellis back will help improve things on defense but will not solve every problem

I agree. The impact won't come from replacing Spencer but in replacing Spears on third and long. That way we have Ellis, Ware and Spencer on the field all at the same time.

That doesn't say he will play.

That doesn't say if he plays how effective he will be.

This is huge.

So there is a slight chance he will play next week.
Watch out RBs and QBs!!

Oh, so you say our problems are more in the secondary?

Well, Ellis brings leadership, experience and wisdom to our defenisve unit, so that means the secondary will also benefit from his leadership, experience and wisdom.

We've missed you Greg!!!!

Ellis at DT in the nickel? That doesn't sound right. He is a defensive end, converted to OLB. Where does it say he moves inside to DT? He would get blown up at DT. Hatcher and Canty should play inside if you yank out Spears. Ratliff would be the guy except he will need a break in the nickel.

Not if your talking the nickle and dime package where you are looking to put pressure on the QB.

Ratliff will be fine at NT. We just need someone to spell him so he doesn't get worn down.

Ellis being back is a good thing. I like Spencer, but I'd rather him be situational at this point. He's coming along nicely though, so I'd expect him to take Ellis' starting job permanently by week 8. Ellis, at that point, will become a welcome situational pass rusher.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ellis return to DE while Spencer continues to start at OLB. Ellis is at his best there and that would let either Canty or Spears slide inside to spell Ratliff.

With Spencer starting to come on, Ware at the other side and Ellis at DE, if Ellis is anywhere near his old self the pressure on the QB has to improve.

Ellis has to rely upon his speed. He is not physical enough to take on a guard that out weighs him by 50 pounds. He comes of the edge. DT have to be physical to get through the line. No spin moves, running around the guy on speed rush. Ellis is not a 4-3 DT, ehich is basically what the nickel will need.

'Sides, who would need to throw when you have an undersized guy on the line? Blow him off the line and run draws into the second level.

He is a 4-3 DE, or a 3-4 OLB. When we converted to the 3-4, he was without a position. C'mon folks, let's not live in a fantasy world.

I know what he is and I'm not living in a fantasy world. In passing situation yes he could play the DE spot in the 3-4 defense where you are shooting the gaps or running stunts

Ummm...read the above posts again-noone said we should move Ellis to DT.

The poster's pt was that with Ware, Ellis, and Spencer on the field at the same time, we can generate more pass rush-has nothing to do with the DT position.

DE in the 3-4? Maybe, but DT n the nickel? I just don;t see how he can be effective from that inside position in the 4-3 nickel front.

Son of a gun! Greg sees Spencer grow leaps and bounds during the game, and decides he better get his butt on the field before he is totally forgotten. He may practice Wednesday, but he better be ready to fight for time on the field. Spencer may not want to give it up.

I would rather keep Spencer in and let Ellis FULLY recover.

I am concerned.

I am too. I hope he doesn't pull a Terry Glenn and hop back on the field too early due to pressure...

Ellis announced he was going to practice on Wednesday last week, before Spencer had a good game. So don't make it out like Spencer is causing Ellis to rush back.

Could it possibly just be that the guy likes to play football and wants to help his team win? Nah...too easy, not a big enough conspiracy

Ellis will help the team in the nickel at d-end, 8 sacks is one every other game, and that was under Zimmers' read and react--I'll take it, please.

Id rather see Spencer on the field than Ayodele. Maybe Phillips can work that out; When Greg comes back, have all three Ware, Ellis, and Spencer on the field. No one on the line is creating any pressure, and at least Spencer was creating some pressure.

Who ever said Ellis was a superstar? His best year was 8 sacks. That ain't going to get him to the HoF. Ellis' is at best a good player. He is a solid pass rusher, but it appears Spencer can do that as well.

I am not sure we are gaining anything by Ellis coming back and taking Spencer out of the game. An improving rookie may be a better choice than a fading veteran.

You, you mean ... Ellis is not the best DE/LB ... in the NFL?

But, but ... all the experts here said he was the best in the land. He built factories for baby milk and was a baby sitter for Jerra's kids and always had wisdom and was a team leader in sacks and good will ...

:stop:Wait jus one minute Mr. Cynical McSkeptic!

You wait and see. he will play and get ... a bunch of sacks and contain runners and then you will be sorry for casting asparagus at our team leader.
It is people like you who make it difficult for us to see our heroes and let me tell you, dude, I for one am looking forward to Ellis getting us back where we were last year . . . or whenever we had a good year!

Sign me,
an Ellis fan since 1985!

:hammer: I'd place Ellis on the IR and take the decision out of his hands.
