Our FA signings Tier 6 or below

OT Armstead for the Dolphins just retired. I wouldn't be surprised if Tyron Smith is their addition to help Patrick Paul's transition to the NFL. I really want the Cowboys to resign Tyron, I don't trust Guyton or Steele to hold up throughout the entirety of this season. Signing him after the draft would be advisable so it doesn't affect the Comp Pick Formula.
You trust Tyron to hold up?

BTW, according to The Athletic, we lost:

27. DE DeMarcus Lawrence
73. RB Rico Dowdle
88. CB Jourdan Lewis
119. WR Brandin Cooks
131. DL Chauncy Golston
136. QB Trey Lance
Lewis and Golston are the only guys that I think they miss. Lawrence is a fraud and always hurt. Dowdle is replaceable. Cooks was done. Lance just could not convince the coaches he could play. Lewis is a very solid vet slot CB. Tough guy too. Golston is a nice rotational guy that could play inside or out.

Because of his type of game, I do think Lawrence can be solid for Seattle if he can stay healthy. He doesn't rely on speed, which usually is the first thing to go. He's not suddenly going to explode for double-digit sacks, but he knows how to get pressure and stop the run.

I think the gentleman qualified already for chewing gum and walking in the woods. Football is still a team sport based upon design and leadership, ON THE FIELD. So you are stepping up here and now, declaring they failed, huh?
You may have to expand on what you're asking me, because I'm a little confused as to how you took my comment and turned it into I declared they failed? I'm not sure I understand...

Did they fail on signing Fowler??? Is that what you're asking me? I don't think so, I just wont overrate the guy strictly because of his sack total. The Athletic put him in tier 7 and #96 overall in their ranking. I'd put him slightly higher, but I'm not sure how their rankings are that far off, especially considering hes the 75th highest paid free agent this offseason. It kinds seems like even the NFL agreed that this wasn't a top tier FA signing. The previous poster comparing Fowler to Myles Garrett because of sack numbers is just odd. Fowler is a fine player, but it's clear that going into year 10 of his career that Fowler is a much better 400 snap player than he is a 800 snap player.

Can we get a comp pick for Lance?

Can we get a comp pick for Lance?
Very possible, but he probably needs to get a couple starts this season somehow. We need to see how much of his deal is guaranteed vs escalator clauses. Hopefully its closer to a $4m deal with a couple million in escalators as opposed to league minimum with a higher volume of escalators. Also if he can get a few starts and get 25% of the offensive snaps he will get credit towards play time in the comp pick formula.

Not sure how his money is.

I remember he had money management problems early in his career.

Friends/family were robbing the guy blind.

He always signed team friendly contracts.

Left a lot of money on the table.
Feel sorry for the guy

I’m rooting for Lance to have a good season. Wouldn’t it be ironic if he played well enough to net us a 4th round comp pick?

If he would agree to a cheap swing tackle back-up position, I don't see how it would hurt. He has to have something left. He would be a good mentor to the young Tackles and he could Retire after this year as a Cowboy. I hope he doesn't have to start, but it's better than nothing.
His last year in Dallas he rarely practiced.

Because it’s such a proven strategy

I thought it was interesting that The Athletic had this year's free agent signings grouped by tiers. Naturally, our front office wasn't selecting from the first or second tiers or even from the first five. Our first signing came from Tier 6, which included "inconsistent or journeyman veterans who still have appeal; youngsters with potential or traits worth developing who have yet to hit their stride; upper-end role players."

68. RB Javonte Williams (Tier 6)

96. DE Dante Fowler (Tier 7 - Veterans who could start if needed, but teams would prefer to upgrade on; role players with a standout trait; talent worth taking a flier on.)

138. LB Jack Sanborn (Tier 8 - Veterans who might be near the end; role players; former draft crushes who haven’t panned out yet.)

DE Payton Turner, OL Robert Jones, DL Solomon Thomas and RB Miles Sanders were not included among 150 free agent signings. LB Kenny Taylor, CB Kairr Elam and QB Joe Milton III were acquired in trades.
What Tier do you find dumpster diving?

The cap problem is a myth perpetrated by the JJ and SJ
It only becomes a problem when you dedicate a massive part of your cap to a sub par player. Teams that suck all have a common trend - they dedicate large portions of their cap to injury plauged guys or guys who flat out struggle when the pressure builds.

Agreed. Even without this tier ranking, you can just look at what the players got paid and know what NFL GMs think of them.

Fowler got a $5 million deal (base plus signing bonus) with a $1 million roster bonus, up to $1 million per game active bonus and a $2 million sack bonus (11 sacks). His deal was on par with K'Lavon Chaisson, not Josh Sweat or Joey Bosa or even DeMarcus Lawrence.

We might feel that Lawrence shouldn't be 27 on The Athletic's tier list, but money (3 years, $42 million) says that's about right. Seattle's GM thought much more of Lawrence's worth than any GM thought of Fowler's.
