Our Offense is Underperforming. Where is the Secret Sauce?

The secret sauce is a better offensive line. Our offense was so much better & more balanced when we had Columbo, Davis, Gurode, Kosier, & Adams blocking up front. In 2007, the offense scored 54 TDs, with 1,756 net yards & 14 TDs rushing. That's an average of 110 yds./game rushing. This offense will continue to struggle as long as it can't run the football for more than the miserable 37 yards they stumbled to today .

I thought it was that magic 12 personnel....you know the 2 TE offense that we spent another 2nd round pick on?!

That was such a dumb pick and that Escobar pick is a perfect example of what's wrong with this franchise.

They could have picked up another OL who could have provided a boost to the run game. That was an actual need. Instead they settle for a 3rd string TE.

Yup, we were sold a bill of goods on the 12 man package. Why did we take Escobar with the second round pick when we needed OL and Safety help? Because this was us emulating the Patriots. Tight Ends flying all over the place like they were witches in Wonderland. What a joke, we all drank the Kool Aid.

If you can't run the ball, you can't run play action to give the QB an extra second to find a mismatch. It really is that simple. Our line is just not good at run blocking. It is not just Bern, the line is never in sync with each other on a consistent basis. Until that is solved, we will continue to be an 8-8 team. We also need to find a TE that can get YAC. Witten is really slowing down and seem to be stuck in mud for huge parts of the game. Having Dez run more slants would help keep the blitz off of Romo.

This is not really true. There was a stat I posted last year that had Romo's QBR with and without playaction. It was something like 25+ point difference favoring the play action passing. And the most interesting thing was it didn't matter how well the ball was being ran. The act of play action was good enough to fool the defense enough where Romo was significantly more effective.

It's beyond me why JG doesn't incorporate more play action instead of passing from shotgun all the time.

An OG like Larry Warford or an OT like Terron Armstead would have been so much better a pick. Warford could have moved right in at RG & reduced the need to reach for a 36 year old retired veteran. Armstead could eventually replace Doug Free at RT. Actually, I was hoping for both.

You're funny. I always laugh at people like you who believe draft picks fix everything magically

I think our secret sauce sat out in the sun too much during training camp and now it has spoiled

We start taking players with 3rd or 4th round grades on our board with the 47th pick we truly are doomed.

Maybe we need a new offensive coordinator to stir the sauce so it don't sour.

Great point......no one knows what this Offense identity is....draft all these TE's, still don't run the ball, looks lost on offense.....nothing new....Hey Jerry I thought you said there would be change.......Looks like the same old Offense to me....LOL

Just a GUT feeling.. but I think the Cowboys are in for some behind close door coaching disputes between Garrett and Calahan.

Running is the secret sauce. BUT WE DON'T or WON't RUN!!!! That's on the coaching staff!!!

Yes you can. Green Bay does it all the time and they don't have a great running game either. Its not the players. Its the entire system on offense. They gone from moving Romo around long ago to making him a pocket passer.

This is an absolute truth that many posters do not understand. Romo is very good with his play fakes, shoulder shrugs and pump fakes but we continually fail to use it to our advantage. I wonder where we rank in terms of percentage of passes using play action compared to the rest of the league? It seems that a lot of passes I see from other teams resulting in big plays involve play action. Look at Eli last week or Rodgers today. And as another poster noted, play action effectiveness is not dependent on how good your running game is - how effective is the running game of GB or NYG? A simple fact is that all defensive linemen are taught to play the run on the way to the QB.

When you take the play action away you do not demand that the defense check that the runner does not have the ball. This checking results in a slowing of the rush even if only for half a count. In my view, this is a major failing of Garrett's view of offensive play design.

We were last as far as play action attempts last year.
