QB: Romo; showed a lot of promise but also problems (ball security, taking too many chances). Though one could argue that he had to take chances late considering the disaster our D had become. He has all the necessary tools to get it done, and he certainly has the self confidence. Discipline is the most needed factor- this is where Jason Garrett will really have to concentrate. Romo has got to figure it out that there are times you gamble, and times you just tuck it and run or throw it away. that is something that Favre really has never learned- I hope Romo does. I think he will take his place as a top 10 Qb in the league this yerar.

RB: Jones/Barber. We will see early on if JJ really can return to his rookie form without BP there watching over his shoulder. Barber needs to keep doing what he was doing. this is a very solid combo and should do well.

FB: Polite just does not do it; Hoyte can be a devastating blocker but we need more. Either develope Hoyte or grab Anderson from Tenn. This position needs upgrading.

TE: Witten. Pro Bowl TE. Nuff said. Fasano is good backup or 2nd TE.

WR: Owens/Glenn. As good a one two punch as there is in the NFL. Crayton is a good 3rd WR.

O LINE: Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Colombo. The Hotel needs to keep playing the way he was late in the season. Kosier was consistent and solid. Gurode the same. Davis SHOULD make a VERY GOOD Guard. Colombo did well- should improve with more time to get stronger; he only has had a total of 26 starts total so still somewhat inexperienced. This line should be solid- not great, but solid.

D LINE: Spears,Canty,Ferguson. Spears needs to step up; we need more from him. Canty as well. this is their third season and they need to show they are the future of this team. Ferguson is VERY solid. We need a real backup NT. Ratlif and Hatcher are young guys with promise. We need more production and more push from our D LINE.

LBS: Ware, Ellis, James, Ayodele. James must do better. Ayodele was very solid. Ware is great. Ellis must come back from the injury. Here is where a shakeup could happen. I think that how Ellis comes back will have a huge impact. Burnett and Carpenter will compete if Ellis cannot. If Ellis does, I can see Carpenter moved inside to battle James. This is the most unsettled part of the team. They should be solid, and may be better then that.

CB: Newman, Henry, Glenn. As good a trio as there is in the NFL. Newman is great at preventing catches, Henry when healthy is very solid, and GLenn is the definition of wiley old veteran. Concerns here are when Glenn will start to lose his speed, and Henry staying healthy.

S: Williams, Hamlin, Watkins. Roy must do better- show more concentration and discipline. When he is on he is a fearsome defender. Hamlin will probably start- if he is fully over his injury he will be almost as good as Woody was. This could be a team strength. Watkins should not be ruled out. Lot of potential.

P: McBriar. Pro Bowl- a real weapon.

K: Automatica- very solid.

KR: Austin or TT- very good.

PR: need someone else other then Newman - do not risk him here!!

FB, backup NT, maybe another O lineman. that is all we really need this year in the draft.

Barber will be our starting RB come opening night against New York. Julius Jones will be too busy blaming his past failures on BP to beat him out for the job.

Good post. I believe that your following points are the key to a very successful season:

I think that the talent's already there. If Phillips can simply bring out the best in them, the sky's the limit for this team.

I believe Aaron Glenn is at the end of his career and is declining fast. The CB position needs serious upgrading for the present and the future. Aaron ROSS is the consensus pick here because of his ability to play the CB position and to return punts. WR needs to be considered for the future also. Owens and Glenn have an injury history and while Crayton would be a solid #2 filling in, I don't think he would be a good #2 an entire season. Plus Crayton backs up Glenn, so who goes in for T.O. if he gets hurt? Sam Hurd? We need a playmaker for the future at t he WR position.

I like the optimism.

I myself will be a little more pessimistic. I will still have my doubts until about mid-season. Then I will have a really good idea if the lines on both sides of the ball have improved and they are both key to Dallas winning.

I have to disagree.

Barber is a great 3rd down/short-yardage guy but he is NOT starting material. He doesn't have the speed to be a breakaway threat and Jones does.

I do expect to see Barber get more carries this season but he isn't going to be the starter.

Kind of how Franchione coaches the Aggies, too busy making excuses for having inherited recruits and players from R.C Slocum to bother taking responsibility for the present.

Barber is a better runner than jone, and will prove it, again, this season.

Jamal Lewis didnt have breakaway speed either, that didnt stop him from setting the NFL record for yards in a game and alost breaking the single season rushing record.

I actually see Julius Jones having an outstanding season then leaving the Cowboys, making the organization regret not giving him more carries all along...

Great post burmafrd. I agree with nearly everything here...although I'm not completely sold on Gramatica. I think we also NEED more competition at CB.

If we pick up a CB and a OLB pass rusher early, get a backup NT and some depth on the OL in the middle rounds (3-5), and throw in a QB, FB, and a WR wherever their value is appropriate...I'll be stoked.

Im actually very interested as to what Garrett is going to do with the runningbacks. Garrett worked with Turner first and Turner likes having a workhorse. Emmitt, Alexander, Jordan, and Gore are all a testament to that. When he was in NY it was Barber and in Maimi there is Brown.

Im interested to see if hes going to even split the carries as mutually as it was done last season.

Jamal Lewis doesn't (or didn't, past tense) have breakaway speed? Um, yes he did.

Or at least, compared to Barber he sure did.

Much bigger than Barber as well but Barber has this swift and shifty fight to him I haven't seen in many backs.

That being said I still want Julius Jones to return to form and start.
