Cee Dee Lamb and to be honest I was surprised Tolberts longest routes in pre Season seemed the 15 yard variety . At South Alabama he was vertical and I assume with Dak in as pitcher some fastballs will be aimed at the rookie . Hoping Smith makes the 53.

He said "deep bombs." Those stats that come out call a deep pass 20 yards or more. Deep bombs are balls 40-50+ yards in the air and that's what I and others are talking about. Dak is not as good as the best at doing that nor does he do it as often as others, hence the rep.

No qb is perfect, and it's a matter of degree anyway, it's not like Dak missed every throw that long. It's not a problem anyway, the Daryle Lamonica days are long past, last year Stafford threw the most passes 40+ yards or more, 18, or about 1 a game. Only 9 qbs threw 10 or more of those. Dak threw 7 of those himself, even if he missed all 7, 7 passes out of 596 is hardly season-changing.

The average qb throw these days is less than 9 yards. Nice to be able to hit a high percentage of those but griping about Dak not being at or near the top of that is nitpicking at best....

Why not? He's got enough arm to make them. If not, perhaps your post needs to move to the Dak sucks area....
If he's flushed out his his left, and the receivers are going right, or vice versa. If the defense is in his face to where he can't see them. Happens to all teams.

Sure, so why even bring it up?

Amazing the different ways posters can say "Dak sucks"....

Besides offensive line, my other big concern is how are we going to make big plays in the passing game. You need those in today's NFL. We have to hope Lamb really snatches the opportunity to be a premier #1. That will help. But with Gallop out for who knows how long, I am having trouble who else makes big plays in the passing game. Even worse when you consider we probably won't have a good line to get extra time.

Look to Noah Brown.
His specialty at OSU was finding a way to get open deep.

Well if you hit on most of your bomb throws, they'd call more of those plays, wouldn't they? Because they are game changers if you can hit on them. Anyway, I'm not saying Dak needs this weapon, I'm just stating the fact that it's a good weapon to have and that Dak is not tops with it. He can be successful without it. It's just nice to have to put a game out of reach and demoralize the other team or to mount a comeback quickly when you need it.

Moore doesn’t run a vertical passing attack. Just accept it. He’ll call them from time to time, but this team doesn’t use vertical routes as a staple. And this year they probably wouldn’t have the protection anyway.

Aside from Brandon Smith's contested catches late in games ... i really didn't get to see much of a vertical game this preseason ...

- Opposing preseason teams got the deep go bomb on us .. per Wright and Bland, but did we get to see that artwork on our part ?

-and we haven't seen Simi Fehoko used or go deep - so it's unknown if he'll be that kind of vertical threat until Dak is in the game ...

- Turrpin ? ..
.Kellen would have to scheme him bunch formations and rub routes to spring him a free release
and head of steam momentum downfield and he's not gonna be a lengthy target

- i still think Gallup would normally be our best deep threat, but hes' still recovering from an ACL injury and who knows if it may take a full season to get anywhere near his full previous pre-ACL form..

Lamb, Gallup, Tolbert, Turpin, Foheko.

All deep threats.

Interesting read, however dated they are :). That being said, my definiton of deep is I guess different than how metrics measure them. According to my calcs he averages 30 some odd yards in 2019, which admirable isn't how the armchair QB fan me looks at as a deep ball. To me, we all stand up and yell at Dak when he has his receiver open down field for big bomb but is unable to see them, or hit them. Now, granted not many QB's can do this, but this is part of his game that if he was able to grasp would open up the rest of his passing game.

Heck I could be wrong, but it is how I define the deep ball....

Garretts offense was known to be deep ball challenged. Once Moore came on the scene that began to change. Once Garrett was fully gone that changed even more. So its only been a few years with this offense opening up.

Dak has no problems throwing the deep ball. He is very good at it.

There's supposed to be an NFL rule against any team throwing deep in Preseason ..?
because none of our starters played so who cares , that why... you awake yet who cares if rush grier and nuch can throw deep to our backups LMAO..that why he said it PS!! maybe also you want teams to believe you wont throw them, catch them off guard with little film of it..

Would like to see stats showing his deep ball percentages then since 2019, I just don't see or buy him being a deep passer. He has had the weapons (not always healthy), but the big home runs just don't seem to be there. Guess I could be wrong but who the heck knows. That being said, if the part of his game that drove us nuts was the number of 50 yard bombs completed I could live with it. It's the stuff in between

Very few fans, I'm sure, remember the state of the Cowboys receiving corp prior to the 2009 season.

They had enough of TO after the 2008 season and his absence created a huge gap statistically.

The remaining receivers were former 7th round pick Patrick Crayton, the disappointing Roy Williams and three undrafted free agents. Kevin Ogletree, Sam Hurd, and Miles Austin.

Ogletree was a rookie, Sam Hurd had recorded 24 total receptions which was still 6 more than Austin's total of 18 up to that point.

Not a very impressive squad of receivers going into a season but here is the reality:

The Cowboys had to throw the ball to someone and that someone was going to build some impressive numbers.

That someone turned out to be Miles Austin, whose 81 receptions yielded 1320 yards and 11 TD's. he made the Pro bowl that season. His yards were almost exactly equal to Ogletree, Hurd, and Crayton's yards combined.

And the reality today is that Dak will find the WR's he's comfortable with to go alongside Lamb and those particular WR's are going to get some numbers. It's not going to matter where or of he was drafted. It's not going to matter what his prior numbers looked like.

Some WR on this current team is going to set himself up for a great future contract. In the meantime, we know that the candidates are Brown, Washington, Tolbert or whoever else makes the 53 man squad.

We truly have no idea what we have since Dak has played the entire pre-season with these Wide Outs. Never figured that one out as he should be completely healthy. Shaking off the rust the first game of the season seems short sighted.
