We have seen a reasonable sample size of Overshown s play. When he’s been healthy he has been pretty solid. But he’s also been hurt a lot. He also did not seem to be quite the player we had hoped he would be when he returned from his last injury to end this season.

Couple of questions about him:

1. Would you re-sign Overshown?
2. What type of player is he currently?
3. Can the Cowboys afford to pay him at his market rate, knowing he is very brittle?
4. Would you ride out his contract and see how he plays or would you try to extend him, when eligible at a reduced rate due to his past injuries.
5. Has he been injured enough that instead of re-signing him, you would take a 3rd round pick (his original draft round) for him and move on to another player?

1. Not right now. Needs to play out his 4th year, healthy at that. If he balls out then the tag is always an option
2. No clue.
3. What is his market rate? Seriously. He's flashed some athletic ability but also isn't someone to stack and shed. He is or was an open space LB with very good speed to chase down on sidelines or pass rush here and there. Think he's became a bit overhyped over his athletics than play and well how bad the other linebackers are.
4. Play it out.
5. No one is trading a 3rd for him, if they did, sure.

He’s the type of player I would approach about an extension now and try to get him at a significant discount. Overshown may not want that and would prefer to play out 2026 to establish his value, but with as many issues as he’s had Overshown may welcome the security of signing early.

I'd normally agree to this but Boys have been burnt trying to re-sign injured players at a discount that turn out to be an overpay (JSmith, Gallup, etc) so I'd pass and see what he does next year

Add in Steele to that mix.
Signed him right after he tore his ACL/LCL.
Could of had him play on his 2nd round tender, but nope, lock him up to be *** in pass blocking for 3 years+
Bland was also re-signed after missing 9-10 games last year and not seeing a single snap under Matt E's scheme.

Overshown came back this year, and it's hard to judge him cause I don't think Matt E ever thought about personnel over what he wanted to run. But then ended the season with a concussion-fluke injury.

Agreed but the issue with those players are they still paid pretty premium money to guys with known injury issue. I’m not sure that Overshown has the resume to command even what Jaylon Smith got 5+ years ago.

This!!! Jaylon’s best year was better than Overshown’s best season that was only 8 games. I like Overshown as a player and a Cowboys player but he might be the most overrated player on our roster.

Yeah the potential is there where he could have a fully healthy season and become a $15m per year type of LB, but realistically could you extend him now for something like 4 years/$24m? $6m per year is low end starter money at the position that won’t hurt too bad if he does end up flopping.

Don't do it Jerry!! Don't get sucked in by the potential of a player based on the money you give him with my injury history he has!!! 1 year deal him to death

Yep, exactly. It's a really delicate balance imo. Because while my gut says get out in front of this, be proactive and offer up a middling 2 to 3 year deal, the team's multiple past contract failings with previously injured players gives me pause to even go forward with it.

It's a good question. I don't think it's fair to judge him off this season. Those knee injuries take a season to get better. He clearly is a dynamic player when healthy. I think the talent is so high that you have to try to get him to sign a show me bridge deal. I would not give him long term money yet.
