Going forward, I worry that Zim is going to fix the run game at the cost of either more big plays or less turnovers or less QB pressure.

Pretty much this is accurate. The overall talent level is going to be almost the same, the new defense will just utilize different attributes of that talent. I'm not sure that this defense will be better or worse overall, it will just be very different, especially situationally. Depending on the match ups week to week that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

I think the only real possibility for true overall improvement is a guy like Mazi, Overshown, Williams, etc truly stepping up and becoming a blue label player.
