Maybe paying homage to another Polynesian player Junior Seau?
This.

We have several Polynesian players at the JuCo I coach at and every year several of them, d linemen and linebackers, ask to wear 55.

58 was also popular a few years back because of Rey Maualuga, that has gone away as Maualuga's career kind of fizzled.

I also think Helman said that there was some discussion that Zeke could wear 22 but that was nixed. I can't remember if it was Jerry or Zeke pushing for 22 though.
Shannon Gross spoke to Zeke on draft night and was suppose to ask what number he wanted and says that Zeke asked for 22 and Shannon told him that probably wouldn't be a good idea so Zeke asked for 21.

If I remember correctly, Zeke wanted 22, but they said no. For Dallas, some numbers get passed down to create a legacy, others are not touched. 22 (as the all-time leading rusher) is the latter. Others are 74, 12 and probably 8. As far as the "Throw up the X" thing and the number 88, I'd guess the X became a thing after he had the number already.

Nice. Thanks for the clarification.

If Dallas retired all the numbers of legends around here, we would run out of numbers.

Frees up a 90s number for our first round pick. It's all about marketing. Jerry doesn't want our first round edge rusher to have to wear a 60s or 70s number because it won't sell jerseys. Jerry is very involved in players numbers. Dez wanted #10 until Jerry convinced him to go with a legacy number in 88. Same with Gregory and 94.

Actually, I could see any WDE/LEO they draft wearing #56.

"Roger Goodell announces delay of NFL draft. Further statements to come."

Evil laugh.

He's going to announce that the first round will be spread out one pick per day for the entire month. It will still be 3 plus hours

The Cowboys don't retire jersey numbers and so I don't see the problem with a player switching to #55, it's not sacrosanct to anything related to the Cowboys.
