OSHA states that a four foot ditch requires escape ladders if it's four feet deep and at 25 foot intervals for departures. If the ditch is five feet deep, there has to be wall reinforcement supports of strong materisl.

The Cowboys non-stop dig their own ditches and not to safety codes...
