What do you call relatively new? They used to draft QB's to sit and learn behind the starter for a few years, or like with Steve Young the 49ers brought him in because they felt Montana was fading with age (same with Luck being drafted to replace Manning).

But I don't recall many times over the last I don't know how many years (decades?) where a team felt strong about the starter they had, and that starter was still young enough to have a lot of years left, where a team brought in real competition through free agency or trade.

You're right that part if it is not wanting or being able to pay 2 high level QB's, but other parts are (1) a high level QB who is a free agent doesn't want to go to a team that hasn't committed to making him the starter, (2) a team doesn't want to give up much in a trade for a QB it isn't sure will start, and (3) team's don't want to be divided in the locker room by a QB controversy.

Much of that occurred in the era before the salary cap. You could bring in a veteran guy with experience relatively cheaply to be a backup or compete, be an insurance policy, groom for the future or compete for the starting job. You really have to draft a QB nowadays because other options tend to be too pricey.

The Colts weren't able to afford the luxury of Luck sitting behind Manning. They cut Manning over a month prior to the 2012 draft when they acquired Luck.

I really don't know.
Curious though.

What I do know is that Mayfield (similar to Dak) has always played with either a good or sometimes even great offensive line and run game, while Darnold has always been stuck with a bad or terrible line and subpar run game...including at Carolina.

It does normally make a HUGE difference.

Maybe McCaffery will be back this year to help them out, but the line is still expected to be awful.

They’re trading did a man child who threw a fit because his team wanted better than him. If he was smart he would’ve sat back and just did what he was suppose to do he’d be starting for a much better team in the Browns. Now he has to compete with Darnold who they traded more for to get.
