...This is not a bash Parcells thread, because I greatly respect him as a coach and greatly appreciate the solid foundation he's brought to this franchise and before last night, I really didn't want to see Parcells retire.
BUT, after hearing Suzy Kolber say things like Parcells just doesn't know if he has it in him to make the off-season commitment to do everything it takes like attend the Senior Bowl, the Combine, Free Agency evaluation, the Draft, etc., I am now very concerned if he does come back! When a coach starts thinking about retirement, he's finished as an effective leader.
A head coach in the NFL can't just do it for the $$ or "for his legacy" or because he "likes this team", it must be an all-consuming desire and passion to compete and win that drives him to out work everyone else and be the best.
A great example of that was Jimmy's last season in Miami when he realized he couldn't win with Marino. 62-7 says it all. Jimmy couldn't wait to climb in his Corvette and head for The Keys. His team reflected the head coach's mindset.
Our finish this season is a reflection of a coach who has had retirement on his mind since the death of his brother which was the week of the 2nd Philly game. We can bash Mortenson and Skip Bayless and every other national reporter who has been saying this was happening, but the signs are clearly there to see. It's obvious if we just open our eyes. After the loss of his brother, the games just didn't seem as important. You could see it in Parcells eyes, in his body language on the sidelines. He looked as if he was on anti-depressant medication. It wouldn't surprise me if, in fact, he was after the shock of losing his brother. But from the beginning of the Monday Night game with Philly, we were never the same team. The Washington game was the crashing point. In that game Parcells just stood on the sidelines with no expression, no fight left in him. His team reflected him perfectly.
Yes, we have many needs like a future QB, OL, Safety, LBers, etc., but the biggest question now is do we have a head coach fully committed to this franchise and if not, where does Jerry go from here?
