Parcells' Retirement: It's In Our Best Interest...

...This is not a bash Parcells thread, because I greatly respect him as a coach and greatly appreciate the solid foundation he's brought to this franchise and before last night, I really didn't want to see Parcells retire.

BUT, after hearing Suzy Kolber say things like Parcells just doesn't know if he has it in him to make the off-season commitment to do everything it takes like attend the Senior Bowl, the Combine, Free Agency evaluation, the Draft, etc., I am now very concerned if he does come back! When a coach starts thinking about retirement, he's finished as an effective leader.
A head coach in the NFL can't just do it for the $$ or "for his legacy" or because he "likes this team", it must be an all-consuming desire and passion to compete and win that drives him to out work everyone else and be the best.

A great example of that was Jimmy's last season in Miami when he realized he couldn't win with Marino. 62-7 says it all. Jimmy couldn't wait to climb in his Corvette and head for The Keys. His team reflected the head coach's mindset.

Our finish this season is a reflection of a coach who has had retirement on his mind since the death of his brother which was the week of the 2nd Philly game. We can bash Mortenson and Skip Bayless and every other national reporter who has been saying this was happening, but the signs are clearly there to see. It's obvious if we just open our eyes. After the loss of his brother, the games just didn't seem as important. You could see it in Parcells eyes, in his body language on the sidelines. He looked as if he was on anti-depressant medication. It wouldn't surprise me if, in fact, he was after the shock of losing his brother. But from the beginning of the Monday Night game with Philly, we were never the same team. The Washington game was the crashing point. In that game Parcells just stood on the sidelines with no expression, no fight left in him. His team reflected him perfectly.

Yes, we have many needs like a future QB, OL, Safety, LBers, etc., but the biggest question now is do we have a head coach fully committed to this franchise and if not, where does Jerry go from here?

Great post. I was ready to come in here and bash on you, but that was a nice post. Either way I just hope he comes to a decision soon.

BP only tells you what he wants you to know. Trying to read into what he says is fruitless. How serious he is thinking about retirement Suzi doesn't know and neither does Mort. If he comes back, I hope he signs an extension. Coming back just to finish out his contract puts in an awkward position.

Why is BP being so secretative about this ? Why not just say I'm coming back or not ? If he was planning on returning wouldn't he just say he was ? The fact that he hasn't doesn't bode well for us now either way.

His brother died and he has a new GF...Maybe he needs a new perspective on life now. Spend time with family that he has not done in years ?

BP is signed through next year, why is there all of this disscussion about his future if he's already signed ? Where are these rumors coming from ? Why doesn't he just frimly say "Why are you all asking, of course I'll be back"...Why does Jerry sidestep the issue when asked during an interveiw.

Something is up or this wouldn't even be a story.

I'll take it one step forward. If your coach cannot put a minimum of 3 years to rebuild a team, then the team needs to look elsewhere no offense against Parcells or what he has done.

But a realization, that it takes commitment from the top on down to build something great.

A Question people should ask themselves is will Bill be commited to 3 or 4 more years( time to develop a QB and an offense) if the answer is no then no need in wasting time.

He's already proven he just doesn't have it anymore. The question being, is he willing to accept that?

I really think you overestimate the effect BP has on anything. You speak of him like he's Yoda.

If he signs an extension this team is screwed.

I also think he hasn't surrounded himself with the quality of coaches he really needs. Part of that was due to his former assistants having moved on when he was retired.

He needs to get rid of Zimmer & hire a DC who he trusts to coach the 3-4 defense as it moves into the 2nd year. A quality DC puts less pressure on Parcells to have to do everything like he has to do now. If Capers was previously good DC using 3-4 & Parcells familiar or has worked with him before, then try to get him on board. I'd also hire a good OC & OL coach who he has more confidence in then the guys currently with us. Significant upgrades at these positions would lessen all the pressure Parcells puts on himself cause he would trust these guys opinions & game plans; don't think he does either Payton or Zimmer. I'm not sure about Martz or would he even be interested in he job, but Vermeil's evaluation of Martz might go a long way. Would either Capers or Martz be interested; neither guy will overlook the fact that Parcells would only stay another 1-2 years if he doesn't retire this year. So it would be big step up for both to possible be considered down the road as HC for Cowboys--not saying that I would want either of them. But the fact is for example that at Tampa Gruden has great DC who stays here no matter who HC, and that probably true for some other DC.

If his heart isn't in it he definitely needs to go- I said a few weeks ago he needs to work harder this offseason than before, but if he can't do that he needs to step aside NOW.

Good post. My only concern about Parcells retiring is, that it is not a good time to find a coach this year, with so many openings. One or two good coaches that will become available will have too many options.

That is a legitimate concern.
