Defensive-centric draft? I get it.
Mocks predicting DE, S, CB? I get it.
Mocks predicting S and CB's that only have a few interceptions in their collegiate career (e.g. Jabril Peppers)? Don't get it...not at all.

A big part of the reason behind the Free Agency exodus being allowed by the Front Office from the Cowboys secondary is the lack of turnovers said Free Agents generated in their time here. So why would the Cowboys have even a fleeting interest in replacing those players with players that struggle to do the same?

Anybody?

While I agree witcha bout not wanting us to use our first rounder on Jabril Peppers, I don't agree w your stance on the reasoning behind it.

I think it's unfair and even downright incorrect to state that Peppers "struggled" to generate turnovers during his time at Meeechigan. Why? Because correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Jabril mostly at Linebacker and return specialist during his career with the Wolverines?

If I'm correct, then I don't see how one could say that the dude struggled to create turnovers when he rarely, if ever played the position during the 3-4 years he was in school. You get what I mean?

Remember all those sacks JJ Watt had at Wisconsin? Yeah, me neither.

The draft is a game of projection. Rate statistics in college is just one piece of the puzzle.

Absolutely. But if I'm using a first round pick on you, I need to see proof. Anything less is a wasted pick until proven otherwise.

To a degree, I agree. But in the secondary, the most accurate way to predict future success in generating turnovers is through college production. Ed Reed was a beast in college. Aqib Talib was a beast in college. Marcus Peters (before he got suspended) was a beast in college. Eric Berry was a beast in college. It's not a perfect correlation - kind of like completion percentage for QBs - but many ballhawks in the NFL were first ballhawks in college.

I haven't really picked a pet cat...yet. But if he has the numbers against top tier competition and meet's the RKG qualifiers, sure.

I like Peppers too but that's a pretty good point the poster is making. The thing is, you don't really know about Peppers I think. He played so many positions that it's hard to say that he will or won't be an impact guy in the TO department. JMO.

And yet everyone screamed we couldn't take Ramsey using the same logic and he finished 3rd in NFL defensive rookie of the year voting and was a pretty good CB.

I get it. Peppers could be the next Ed Reed. The difference? Ed Reed had alot of interceptions in college. The proof was in the pudding. Granted, it is not necessarily fair to compare the two players considering Reed lived in a place rich with the opportunity to get interceptions, but still...if I'm going to use a first round pick on a player, and I'm also simultaneously attempting to fix my lack of turnovers issue, I'm going to go get the guy who has the stats to backup the claim that they can fix that issue. Savvy?

Gerod Holliman from Louisville tied a NCAA record a couple of years ago with 14 interceptions in a season. He entered the NFL draft afer his junior year and two years later, he's barely a backup in this league.

The point being, that trying to project the ability to take the ball away based on college stats is pointless.

I get it. But at the same time, this is a slightly different conversation. You may recall, I was on the draft Zeke side of that argument. And my argument today remains the same. Who helps the Cowboys win more? Ramsey or Zeke? I still say Zeke.

But now that we have Zeke, what the Cowboys are doing now should be clear to everyone. They are trying to fix the lack of turnovers...which, by the way, I'm 100% behind. But if you then go and draft a guy who doesn't have the numbers to back up what you are trying to fix, I will be lost, until Jabril proves otherwise that he is a turnover machine. But I think we all know that Peppers game is not about generating turnovers.
