Bijan number 2 overall on McShay's recent big board! Safe to say he's not playing with Micah.
Wish it could have happened but I think Bijan might go top ten!

So was Zeke. Where did that get us!?
Preach!!!! I don’t understand. We drafted Zeke high, gave him a bunch of carries, paid him handsomely, and watched his production decline yearly. Yet, these same people want to draft Bijan. So after 4 years what are we going to do with Bijan? Let him go or pay him alot of money

McShay is way off base with that mock.
If Texans are bypassing the QBs -- they are picking the top rated defensive prospect on their board -- be it Edge or DT.
Will Anderson Jr., Tyree Wilson, Jalen Carter, Myles Murphy.

Play him four, franchise five, let him go, rinse, repeat.

Mcshay isn’t saying Bijan will go 2nd overall, just that he’s the second best talent. In his mocks he recognizes that RB is devalued

Hey A.L., who do you think your guys will take in the first?
I know you didn’t ask this specific question, but there’s no shot in hell we take Bijan.

But aside from that, We’ve had multiple years with more than 1 1st round pick and never used both; consider 2021 when we had3 and still only used 1. I think Howie doesn’t love it when multiple big contracts come up at the same time, or he has to decide on multiple 5th year options at once, he much prefers to stagger them.

As for position: We haven’t drafted a 1st round RB in 35 years, and that won’t change this year. RB, TE, S positions simply arent valuable enough to spend 1st round picks on. Ask yourself this question: Jason Witten was by most people here a top 5 TE who ever lived. Would you trade his career for a top 5 WR who ever lived? Randy Moss? Would you trade him for a top 5 DE who ever lived, Bruce Smith? Would you trade him for a top 5 LT who ever lived, Anthony Munoz? Of course you would! Because no matter how much you love Witten and respect everything he’s given to the franchise, you also recognize that TE is simply not as impactful a position as pretty much any other position. The fact that teams take TE’s or RB’s in the first round every year despite comparable talent at way more valuable positions shocks me to no end.

Here is the Eagles drafting philosophy in a nutshell:

NFL-Franchise-Tag-Amounts-2023.png

The blueprint for drafting is right there, it’s really surprising how many teams ignore this. Based on the franchise tag values, NFL front office’s view RB as the 22nd most important team need on offense and defense, based on both the fact that they’re all part time players in committees, and that in 2023 no RB is irreplaceable.

It’s not just the talent of the player like Bijan, you have to consider the difference in the alternative RB instead of him or a lineman vs alternative. It would be very easy to replace a RB like, say, Miles Sanders, whether it be with 1 individual or a committee. The year we won the SB was with bargain basement RBs and were like 2nd in the league in rushing. Now consider if Landon Dickerson went down; what would you have to pay in FA to get a decent replacement. 8m AAV? More? There are a lot of backups around the NFL right now making 5+m AAV… and that’s the least important Oline position. There are RBs still on the free agent wire right now who are talented, would immediately produce for you, and would sign for half that. So not only is a lineman just more valuable overall, A O/D lineman’s 5th year option based on that franchise tag list is way more of an asset than a RB’s due to the cap benefits of waiting to re-sign him.

My prediction is We’ll move back from 10 to get some more capital in 2023 or 2024(another 1st would be sweet), then take Nolan smith somewhere around 17-22. At 30 we’ll also move back to recoup all the mid round picks we’re missing, and hopefully get Kancey early in the second round. That would be a nice day 1-2 IMO.

Get someone else
Okay…….but that’s a first round pick. I’m not trying to draft a player in the first round I plan to replace in 4-5 years, which is why I wouldn’t draft a running back in the first. 3rd round okay. But not a first.

Wow, thanks for the detailed answer! By the way, I’m no fan of the RB in the first, but you know Jerry. I just think if Dallas DOES go for Robinson, they should play him for four, franchise the fifth, then draft another one. RBs aren’t as important as they used to be. I say protect your QB, and go after theirs.

Part of that was a response to this thread, but part of it was also seeing someone mock a TE at 26 to you in the draft board here. Why would you do that? You’re throwing away talent. The odds of him being Travis Kelce are 0.0. Maybe he accumulates 15% more stats than the TEs you already have over the course of his rookie deal, but that won’t change any season results for you. What was difference between 2021 Dalton Schultz and 2022 Dalton Schultz on your season finish? Absolutely nothing, because the backups stepped up and filled in just the same. But TE over another starting Olineman for the next 10 years? A real DT for once in your lives?

I think it’s fantasy football and selling jerseys and Madden covers that warp people’s minds. The answer is right there but no one seems to see it

Well it got us to Cabo. Zeke was a good draft, but Cabo started a long slippery slope.
You can’t just look at it as Zeke vs no Zeke. Who were available when you drafted Zeke instead? And I’m not talking Jalen Ramsey. The next 5 Lineman off the board:

6th Overall: Ronnie Stanley, Ravens franchise LT and the reason they traded away Orlando Brown. Draft him and you have the best pair of tackles that decade.

7th Overall: Deforest Buckner, 49ers DT. A dominant pass rushing DT is one of the rarest things in the NFL, and all these guys lead their teams to SBs. Buckner in 2019, Suh in 2018, 2020, 2022, Fletcher in 2017, 2022, Donald in 2018, 2021. So valuable to have that interior pass rush, titans were smart to give Simmons all the money they had.

8th overall: Jack Conklin, Titans. Signed with the browns in FA, and has started every single game he’s been healthy for his entire career. Dude will be around another 5 -10 years starting for someone.

12th Overall: Sheldon Rankins, Saints. Played well enough for them, went to Jets in FA. Has never made a pro bowl but was a vital cog on that 2022 jets D, started every game. Another dude who’ll be around for many years forward.

13th overall: Laremy Tunsil, Dolphins. Franchise LT that Houston paid insane amounts for in a trade. 3 time pro bowler including 2022. Will be a Franchise player for a long time still.

It’s not that Zeke wasn’t a good player. Zeke made all pro teams but it’s still not close. The opportunity cost in taking him so high in the draft simply wasn’t worth it

He's ranked #2 prospect, but it's hard to imagine he's going to go in the top 10. RBs have a short lifespan. I wouldn't shy from one late in the 1st due to that, but gimme a guy that can play throughout a 2nd contract in the top 10.
