Pass Rush doing better than many believe...

Couple of thoughts:

Jags game: I think the plan was to drop back in coverage and force the Jags WR's and Lefty to beat us, figuring that we had the advantage. For whatever reason, we were wrong. I don't know if we just had a bad game, opening game jitters or what, but our defense just looked a step slow.

Skins game: We brought enough heat and kept the skins offense contained the entire game. Penalties were the problem.

Titans game: I think we held back on the rush, not wanting to create big lanes for VY to run through and make big plays. We still forced some turnovers and blew them out without bringing much heat at all.

That leads us to the Iggles game: We need a delicate balance because while you don't want to let McNabb have all day in the pocket, you don't want to rush upfield and miss him, creating big lanes for him to make plays on his feet. I think we match up well with our secondary against there WR's, so I think it will be a mix of the Jags and Skins game, where we mix in some blitzes while also dropping back in coverage trying to contain Westbrook and LJ Smith, the 2 players other than McNabb who can really hurt us. I don't see Stallworth doing much against TNew, especially with a questionable hammy.

Passer rating isn't enough by itself. If you give the ball to the other team, for example, a shortened field can substitute for good offensive production.

The 2003 season proved to me you can have great defensive stats and not be a playoff calibre defense.
I think we're a legit top 10 pass defense though, although it is early in the season. Points allowed is usually a great indicator of defense, and ours is skewed by a 100-yard KO return right now, but I bet we finish pretty high there too.

2003 was a strength of schedule issue. We gave up huge yardage to any decent team we faced from Thanksgiving on.

as was explained countless times before, and once already in this thread, during the 2nd half, Jax went to alot of 3-step drops, and hitting the WRs quickly, taking advantage of their size, shielding the football from our CBs

the rest is right on

Yes and No. After Witten had his TD called back and we missed the FG, this happened on the Jags following TD drive:

1-10-JAC39 (15:00) B.Leftwich pass deep right to M.Jones to DAL 36 for 25 yards (T.Newman).

1-10-DAL36 (14:17) B.Leftwich pass deep right to M.Jones to DAL 14 for 22 yards (A.Glenn).

It also didn't help we had 2 turnovers that gave the ball to the Jags on our OWN 40 and 32.

I said that was the gameplan in the 2nd half

Im sorry but it seems that some people dont think the pass rush is adequate or that the defensive coordinators are terrible unless a defense is hitting the QB on every single down. With the exception of the Oakland Raiders this is patently false. It just doesnt happen.

Also contrary to apparent belief, sacks are indeed an idication of whether a pass rush is good or not. Now granted, the better metric would be QB pressures + sacks but seeing how difficult that stat is to get ill settle for sacks over some random assessment of a 'pressure' defense.

I thought Witten's PI call was in the 2nd quarter?

3rd Quarter:

3-4-JAC10(2:02) D.Bledsoe pass short right to J.Witten for 10 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on DAL-J.Witten, Offensive Pass Interference, 10 yards, enforced at JAX 10 - No Play.

3-14-JAC20(1:57) M.Barber right end to JAX 18 for 2 yards (R.Mathis).

4-12-JAC18(1:32) S.Suisham 36 yard field goal is No Good, Hit Right Upright, Center-L.Ladouceur, Holder-T.Romo

hmm, I coulda swore it was in the 2nd quarter, but still, Jax utilized alot of 3-step drops, so you're right, my statement was yes and no

Post of the day to me. Actually, in the Jax game, I never saw so many passes where the defender had the pass block right their, but just missed it. I think we just think we don't have to blitz, our secondary is supreme. They are very close to being right, but not againts the Mannings of the league.

OPPOSING PASSER RATING

1 Baltimore....49.9
2 San Diego...50.2
3 Kansas City.54.6
4 Atlanta.......57.5
5 Cincinnati....62.5
6 Dallas.........65.0
7 Chicago......65.6
8 St. Louis.....67.5
9 Jacksonville.69.4
10 N.Y. Jets...71.0

This is a better measuring stick for pass defenses than sacks, pressures, etc. because it indicates how much success opposing QB's have against a defense.

We're right up there.

Good stats...we do have a good pass defense...I would not argue that...but the thread was that we have a good pass rush...that I will not agree with. I believe we have a good pass defense because we have very good guys in the secondary.

Nice stats, but they mean nothing unless the occassional sack is all you care about.

Pressure, constant pressure, is all that really matters, and NO, we haven't had it.

Every single game had stretches of the game where the QB had all day in the pocket to sit and look over the defense...it is a bad sign.

The type of pressure Burnett put on Young produces turnovers like James's TD. It can't be ocassional...sacks can be 2, 3, 4 a game and not really have any impact on the game, but constant pressure that rushes or moves the QB changes the timing and causes late or early deliveries that result in turnovers. That's far more important than a sack...we don't bring consistant pressure...not yet.

yep

and this is (so far) probably the best offensive line we've faced in 4 games.

The Tennessee game is not a good barometer. It was widely discussed that the Cowboys WANTED Vince to throw the ball. They didn't make a concerted effort to pressure him because that would have allowed him to use his legs more.

so is that why we didnt pressure Leftwich too?

Remember preseason? Everyone clamored "Zimmer and Parcells are just holding back"..."they dont want to reveal all their new blitz and presscure schemes"

maybe they still think its preseason

if "agenda" means I would like to see a better use of the talent on defense and see us knock some QB's down with regularity, then yeah, I guess it is

Better use? You mean by gimmicks or blitzing more?

Seems to me if the pass rushers' talent was special in the first place you wouldnt have to bother that much.

Or maybe they are special but Bill doesnt think it would be fair on the other team if he didnt hold his guys back.

Or maybe he tells them this.. "Now listen fellas.. even if it's 3rd and 8 I want you guys to engage with your man for as long as possible.. theres too many roughing the QB calls these days and you know how much penalties piss me off"..
