He's shown that? From what I've seen he's a guy who has never been asked to play within any scheme. They just put him out there and let him do his thing. Maybe that will work at the next level, I'm a little skeptical. Especially for a Round 1 guy.

Yes, based on what I have read, he can and will be a SS in this league.

lol. The combine!! Its the same every year. Who can say what will become of any of these young boys...they look like can't miss HoF at the combine. The NFL is a different situation. Won't remember most of their names in 2 yrs.

Let's note that the Peppers hype isn't from the combine. In most mocks he was listed as a first round pick.

That's where they're going to put him. I'm just saying it's a projection because he hasn't shown that he can play SS at an NFL level. Too much risk for my blood.

Where are you playing him? And I'm asking you personally. ON this defense is he a safety?

He's a safety in this league. If we were to land him, we would have the most athletic with the most range of any safety duo in the league. People get to caught up on INT's in college. As Deion and Mayock mentioned yesterday...lots of INT's in college can easily mean that they were throwing at you a lot because you couldn't cover.

The only question I have is how well he can pick up the offensive schemes and what offenses are trying to do. Thankfully, Byron did a good job of directing guys last year. But if you can get 2 safeties that know what they are doing, now you're really strong in the defensive backfield.

Darren Woodson didn't play safety in college, either. And this guy is just as much of an athlete and playmaker that Woodson was. Just sayin'.
Darren Woodson also wasn't a first round pick. And he was bigger than Peppers. 6-1 220, compared to 5-11, 207. He was also faster. Not quite the same guy.

So they labeled him a LB some and a S some. That doesn't address my point. Watch the tape. He freelances most of the time and in the NFL that can get you in trouble. You might make a few plays, but you'll give up more.

That's not what article says. You're trying to make facts fit your narrative.

Lol, what do you mean he "freelances?" Do you really think the DC on staff would allow Peppers to break assignment and jut freelance on defense like "what's Peppers doing? We can't control him; he's got a mind of his own!!!"

The hybrid position he played allowed him in certain offensive setups to use his athletic ability to make plays at the LOS; there was no going rogue.

I like the UConn kid but if I had to take a SS at 28 and it was between Peppers and Melifonwu, it's a no brainer.

His position was "go get the football". He wasn't asked to be part of a scheme. The DC schemed around him being free to go get the football. The traits he displayed in doing so were more in line with a LB than a safety. But since he clearly doesn't have the size to be a LB he is being cast as a safety. And he's athletic enough, it might work. But it's still a risk and a projection that I wouldn't spend a first round pick on.

agree with all this,if he plays Barry Church's role for us then he wont make a hue difference,we can do way better at 28.

For SS height is 14% and Weight is 82%. So he's short for the position but thick. Short arms and a smallish vertical.

At LB he's one of the lowest % scored at both height and weight. But his athletic numbers stand out.

I do think he's someone who you have to have a plan for. He's a better player closer to the line of scrimmage, by all accounts, but he's not a LB in this league. He wasn't asked to cover much in college, and when he was the results were supposed to be not all that good. So you have a SS that can't cover and plays better the closer he gets to the LOS, sounds like someone you need to have a very good idea of how you're going to use them and keep them clean.

My gut feeling is that Dallas won't take him at 28, even if he was there.

1 INT over 3 years? What part about that screams playmaker to you?

BTW - Peppers started in the secondary, then got moved to LB. Slightly different from Woodson.

13 TFL, 3 sacks in his role as a LB last year.

He played in just 3 games as a freshman which is not uncommon. His sophomore year he played safety and tallied 5.5 TFL and 10 PDs.
